A pump was placed in the first turn, which had turned into a major sized lake, and left to run all night. Still, the next morning, the track was 90% mud. Undaunted, the Spinners and friends ~et to work. Byrac'e time, although spotted with a few soft spots and a large puddle on the inside of turn one, the track was in good shape. A pat on the back is definitely deserved by the Spinners. Lyle Moore really got it all together and rdn away with the 250cc Junior. Lyle jumped right out into the lead off the start and never looked back at the batble going on between Wayne Howard and Dave Hodges for second sP0l. At the checkered, Lyle led by almost half a straight over Howard and Hodges. Another run·away win was recorded by Bob Young in the Open Junior on what has to be the strongest 40-incher around. Bob pretty much held his ground in the turns, but come the straights it was banzai and he would just leap away from the pack. Bob was followed by Ken Hansen and Bud Wall at the finish. The little guys on the 50cc tiddlers put on their usual great show as Bill Ritchey and Kirby Shropshire renewel! their battle in the 50cc Junior class. These small bikes seem almost lost on a big track like this, but what they lack on the long straights, they more than make up for in the turns. Bill picked up the win, followed by Kirby and Kirk Lessley. Paul Bostrom and some buddies enjoy a leisurely cruise along Vacaville's back chute. Baumann Solos For Double Wins By Sam Mangalin VACAVILLE., CAL., June 6, 1971 Art Baumann, taking advantage of teammate and rival Ron Grant's absence, sped to very convincing wins in both the lightweight and 500-0pen GP events aboard the same machine at the Benefit Road Race held by tbe Richmond Ramblers M.C. The race: was held in conjunction with a drawing for a new Honda 350 and other prizes, with all proceeds going to the Manor Halfway House, a local organization helping ex·convicts re·establish themselves in the community. Perhaps it was only just reward for and swapped the lead back and forth on most every lap, sometimes several times on the same lap, as they took turns out breaking' each other through the series on the backside of the course. On the last go round, however, Judkins' Yamaha called it quits and Green found himself all alone. Alone Baumann, who had been "robbed" of a win at the checker by Ron Grant in the previous outing on the Vacaville road course. In the big race, Baumann and several other small displacement machines were hadicapped 50 yards behind the bigger bikes. But by lap four Baumann was back in command, finishing well over half a lap in front of second place man and Open class winner Ned Marandino aboard his ageless Norton. Paul Bostrom placed third overall and took the 500 class win looking very smooth on a Kawasaki HIR. Bostrom is picking up the technique and finesse, and should prove to be able competition for some of the more highly touted boys in the near future. The majority of the racing was sporatic, most classes being decided in the frrst few laps, but in the 350 GP, John Green and Bill Judkins provided the race of the day. They put their Yamahas together right from the start indeed, as there. were only two bikes running at the checkered, and they were at opposite ends of the course. The blistering pace the two Yamaha speedsters set just ran the competition into the ground, literally! After the races were run, Baumann helped with the drawing, and then, COllecting his victory kiss from the lovely Race Queen, there too he outclassed the field, he packed up and headed for Loudon, New Hampshire, where he will join up again with Ron Grant and have ~ go at the AMA 100-Mile National Road Race. This being the first road race ever put on by the Richmond Ramblers M.C., they enlisted the talents of some A FM regulars to help run the show. They worked well together, putting aside for the time being some of the little differences that plarue the AFM and AMA organizations, and provided a good day of racing for a very worth y cause. --- OSSA Pre.ier Sliowing of Dielr Mall 'e,'iea TT S,ecia' ALL MODELS IN STOCK Now at E.
