ON THE CLEANER SIDE In the rider-by-rider restart, Roberts again took off with Penn second but Lane was held back 18 seconds after Roberts and this may have hurt. Roberts again controlled the point until lap 10 when his engine blew and Penn was left with the lead and Lane in second, unable to close for the rest of the race. Penn had a fast average speed of 71.77 to win. Saturday's Combined 250 saw the ever-steady Carruthers 'lead almost all the way to win. An outstanding performance was turned in by Jerry Green of San Mateo, Calif., as he kept close to Kel's record setting .performance to take second. Kel's speed was 75.39 mph. Howard Lyngaard brought his Yamaha in for the Novice victory with a speed of 67.83. John Long, however, was the strong performer as he led the UNDER HIS CHIN ... As you know by now, Cycle News has been paying contingency prize money of $100 to any rider winning a National with a CoN stickie plastered to their machine. Saturday night, a Harley-Davidson official is reported to have ordered the removal of all the CoN stickies from the Harleys competing in the National and they were removed. Sunday when the riders lined up for the National, Cycle News' Dixie Editor, Don Woods, gave Mark .Brelsford one of the small stickies, but Mark never put it on. He did, however, win the $100 cash. Why? After the race, Mark proudly lifted up his ch in rest 0 n his gas tank and what should be revealed? Although not prominently displayed, Mark was a bill richer_ fIrst half until his engine began to miss. This relegated him to an eventual third The Loudon National, better known as "Laconia", annually draws thousands of spectators for the weekend of racing and this year was no exception. An estimated 40-50,000 fans ended up tamping along a 25-miJe stretch of road near the course and, incredibly, no incidents were reported. On Sunday evening, after the events were completed, local residents and officials were even more amazed at what they saw. Without being asked, and with no organization at all, the entire 25-rnile stretch of makeshift campgrounds were policed by their occupants and all the trash, etc., were placed in plastic bags and placed along the side of the highway for easy pickup. And, in those instances where bags were not used, the trash was piled neatly so that it could be scooped up in one lump sum.
