Corona: AContinuing Saga By Elaine Jones The city's first and only motorcycle trail park is no more, thanks to William Smith of the Corona Planning ~ w Z W ...J CJ > CJ Commission. After a brief attempt to extend a temporary permit for a motorcycle park at Corona Raceway, owner Laura Lipari said she was withdrawing her application_ Her comments came i m media tely after Commissioner William Smith said he did not feel a temporary permi t was the proper type of application to be sought. Smith said that in view of the amount of interest in the Raceway, a public hearing should be held, so anyone interested would have a chance to be heard. The opponents of the park who were present live one mile away across Riverside Freeway and were represented by two lawyers. One resident on the track side of the freeway was present_ Outside the meeting room, Mrs. Lipari said she would not apply for a conditional use permit for the motorcycle trail park. She said she would prefer just to let the whole thing drop. "I am tried of being harassed, let someone else decide what to do with the motorcycles. Let thc:[Il have the hills. Let's see what they are going to do with the hills." Mrs. Lipari was referring to the hilly land north of the racetrack on which the 150-acre proposed trail park was located_ At the time she sought her fIrst temporary permit, there was considerable comment from residents that cyclists were already using the hills without pennission. She had said that a fenced park with only one entrance would keep cyclists in one controlled area. Part of the complaints about motorcycles have come from over the hills in the La Sierra area_ Many of those coming from this area attend school at Lorna Linda University, one of the most vocal complainers_ The campus is three miles from the park bu t the students are not allowed to have bikes on campus so they rent garages in the vicinity and then ride the back way to the park. The commission recently granted a 90-day temporary permit for the motorcycle trails to see how such a park would work out That permit expired June 10. The Liparis fenced the property before the park was opened, put in sanitary facilities and obtained insurance. It has operated for several weekends. Mrs. Lipari said, referring to members of the C&H Mini-Mites· who were present, "I don't want these children used as pawns for anyone's political ambutions. " After she withdrew her application, she said she had originally intended to apply for a permanent permit as suggested by Smith. She was advised by two city officials, however, to try for a temporary permit rather than a permanent one_ "I wish you would make up your mind what you want to do," she said. During a break by the Commission, Smith elaborated on his feelings about motorcycles and at this time stated cycle riders do not vote. He would not state where he got his information. He was told by a cycle enthusiast to wait until the next election. The children were also fired upon outside the hearing room when they asked opponents of the park what they had against mini-bikes. One lady went out of control screaming actions like asking people is what gave them their image and that they were rude and had no manners. The next day they went on the local radio talk show on KPRO and said the children had harassed the adults. This reporter placed a phone call to their attorney who was standing with them and asked if the children had behaved in the way allegcd and he denied it saying they had behaved very well. The motorcycle trail park is separate from the racetrack itself, which has been the subject of action by the county. The county Board of Supervisors, several weeks ago, instructed District Attory Byron Morton to order the raceway to halt night and Sunday racing. Because the track is within the City of Corona, however, City officials have questioned whether the county board has any jurisdiction over the track. City A ttomey Robert Timlin said the applicant could apply at any time for a conditional use permit. AMA SETS 30 DAY LEAD TIME FOR RACING EQUIPMENT APPROVAL To facilitate proper p'rocessing of approved modified production racing equipment, the AMA has established a minimum lead time for submissions of equipment to be approved. All equipment approval forms must be properly submitted and arrive at the AMA home _office, 5655 North High Street, Worthington, Ohio 43085, 30 days prior to the first event in which such equipment is to be approved. This is an alteration of a former procedure whereby equipment could be approved up to the day of the race. Motocross, Placerville, Calif. Mav 30-31, 1971 1st - 125 NOVICE DIV.
