Hol(omb Collects Continental IX Cash By Larry Knop Photo by Gary Payne SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, May 30-31, 1971 - Utah and California split the cash, but Utah kept most of the brass. Thus was the story at the Continental Motocross Association's memorable Memorial Weekend Motocross. It was a big show, with riders aging 7 to 47, from California, Nevada, Colorado, Idaho, and Utah present. The star of the show, however, was California pro Bryar Holcomb. The 250 Professional class was the highlight of the day. A thousand people waited to see how the local favorites would stack up against the visitors. The flag went up and bikes screamed into the first comer. Coming out it was Utah, Utah, Utah, with Steve Burgess in the lead followed by Kerry Fowler and Woody Lawhon. Muscatel was back in 4th and Holcomb was way back in 7th. Then Holcomb started to move and the next five laps were worth the day's admissi·on. Overtake and pass, overtake and pass, with scarcely a pause. By the half-way point he was in first, and the con test was settled. The second moto was a different story. Muscatel jumped to an early lead, pushed hard by Lawhorn. Holcomb again got a poor start, but he was soon with the leaders. Around and around with Lawhorn trying to zap Muscatel and Holcomb trying to zap them both. With two laps to go Lawhorn passed and Holcomb soon followed suit. Now the Myers Dom.inates By Blaine Harrington STRASBURG, COLO., June 6, 1971 Today was a beautiful day for motocross and Gary Myers, veteran of European competition, took advantage of it. Gary took it easy on his injured leg and still blasted all the other 500cc Experts into the weeds. Myers and his super-light Husky took first in all three motos with no riders in a threatening position all day. John Meyers consistent riding was good enough for second overall. Mike Lee (Hus) was right behind him with a pair of thirds and a fourth which figured to third overall. In the 500cc Sportsman class three riders, Chuck Lunde, Don Fox and Dave Curtis, dominated. They finished in that order all three times. Another triple sweep occurred in the 250 Expert class; Jim Wicks (Mai) cleaned up with three firsts and a big edge on second place Gary Chase (Hus), who had three seconds. Bill Osthoff (Yam) hung in there with a third and two fourths and received third overall for the effort. Lee Porter, 250 Sportsman, was out to win today, and that he did. Doug Cambell, th ough he didn't race one heat, had a first and second - good enough for seeond overall. Jim Wagner also didn't race one heat but he was up th.ere high enough in the points to take home third place gold. In the 125 Expert class Bruce Sass got back into the swing of things by taking first in two heats and a second in the other. Bruce, who is Colorado's 125 Number One Plate holder, rode a Carabella today. He is recently back on a bike after being out of racing for about five and a half months because of a really bad leg injury incurred at Atwood, Kansas last October. Behind ~and Hills Sass was two Yamahas ridden by David Hamby and Ron Lewis. In the 125 Sportsman class James Lewis (Yam) took all 40 comers and beat 'em all with a pair of firsts and a second. Larry Wilson and David Worrell kept in close distance on their Bultacos and finished in that order. With Sass taking first in the 125 Expert class, and Gary Myers and Jim Wicks winning their classes Rink-a-Dinks Sports Center of Lakewood took a grand slam this afternoon. (Results on page 24) pressure was on Lawhon, but on the last lap Holcomb spun out - making a complete 360. Lawhon didn't wait and Muscatel also slipped by leaving Holcomb to settle for third. Third moto, Holcomb didn't take any chances. He got a better start and by the 3rd lap the lead and the top money were his. Lawhon took 2nd place cash over Muscatel. The Open Professional class was a different story. In the first moto Holcomb got his 400 Maico off the line in good shape and cruised home fust. Between motos, however, his 400 came unglued. He started the 2nd moto on his 250, but this was against the rules and he was black-flagged. It cost him $125 because he was fully competitive on his 250, but both Holcomb and team manager Birt accepted the ruling like gentlemen. (CMA officials later commented that they wished some of the local riders had only half as good an attitude.) With Holcomb out, local rider Frank Myers took the opportunity to show his speed the second moto. Third moto it was Batistoni who found the quick way around, leading from start to finish. Dennis Packard came through for his third 2nd of the day however, gaining enough points for first overall. Batistoni just edged out Myers for second. The final score, incidentally, was Utah $250, California $250. c ": .., ::0 ~ w Z w -' o > o Bryar Holcolm shows MX talent. ~ ~~ THE BIGGEST EVENT OF ITS KIND EVER HELD. • 80,000 SQ FEET UNDER ONE ROOF. • THOUSANDS OF MOTORCYCLE PARTS AND ACCESSORIES. • HUNDREDS OF SELLERS WITH PARTS THAT YOU WANT. • BRING THE WHOLE FAMILY FOR FUN. • PARTS, TOOLS, TIRES, HELMETS, FRAMES, WHEELS, EXPANSION CHAMBERS, PIPES, MUFFLERS, SEATS, HANDLEBARS, CHOPPER PARTS, DIRT RIDER PARTS, ANYTHING AND EVERYTHING FOR MOTORCYCLES AND MINI·BIKES.
