Bobby Ferro, 23, driving the entire distance by himself, demolished Parnelli Jones' record of last year and established himself as the King of Baja. His time for the 550 miles was 11 hrs. and 11 mins., 44 minutes better than Jones' old record. Ferro's average speed for the long trip was just under 50 mph! Ferro is a well-known desert racer and past member of the Checkers M.C. His most recent notable victory on bikes was in the Check Chase of last year, a scorching 200-mile run to the Colorado River. Another ex-motorcyclist was third overall. Bud Ekins who teamed with Drino Miller in a VW buggy, took first in his class with a time of 11 :39. The Husqvarna team of Malcolm Smith and J.N. Roberts chopped 37 minutes off the time of last year's motorcycle champions, Billy Silverthorne and Gene Fetty, and came within 5 minutes of besting Parnelli Jones' record, but they were still beat by three cars in the overall race. There were two classes for motorcycles this year, and the break point was set at 125cc. The bike riders were competing for a good share of the Gary Jones. INS!
