BAY MARE, SOMIS, CAL., June 6,
1971 - One often wonders where in the
hell so many fast riders come from!
Today's overcast skies brought some of
California's finest riders to Bay Mare
challenging fellow competitors for ego
boosts and greenbacks.
Starting with the 125 Novices, Div. 1
was Hueneme Cycle's Larry Burgess and
D~vid Kolbe )!oing 60 minutes of ra~ing
WIth a pOSSIble 10 yards of dallght
ben.:een them for the three-moto day.
Dlv. 2 was Danny Wade (lucky duck
and a~) working off two bad star:ts and
managmg a 3rd overall bebmd a
meaningful Jim Cooke and Bob Popa.
125 Am/Ex. was a see-saw with
Ruchen Benites squeeking out Gene
Cannady for a first - and, first riding as
an Expert, Ken Zart third overall.
The 250 Novices was all Bob Fortier,
with Simi's Steve Rawson aiming his
new
"Naguchi-Yamaha"
for
two
seconds and a flying first. Rawson
allowed this writer a test-fly on his bike
and the only comment describing the
newcomber's potential is that on the
straigh t-aways, an oxygen mask pops
down from your helmet.
Slipping into the 250 Am/Ex. class,
one found Doug Grant piloting his AJS
to another overall win with the likes of
Steve Scott and the unreal Bob Grossi
always within a sna1
