Slarlin' Out Young
have a coat of dust. One spot in
particular had some signs at the head of
a wash that said "Heads up" 'vrum out
of wash" "2 miles ahead" which was a
good idea, except that there was so
much dust when I (R.S., that is) went
by that I never saw the second sign and
the turnout was marked with one
streamer and there was red ribbon
continuing down the wash. No big
thing, just a bit sloppy. A couple arrows
could have made it unmistakable. There
were three or four other similar spots.
About 230 riders finished the
difficult course and received their
"Survivor" pins. That's what the Desert
Knights called them, honestl Most of
those that I talked to couldn't say that
they had enjoyed it but they did have a
feeling of accomplishment, somewhat
similar, I guess, to having survived the
Battle of Guadacanal. J.N., of course,
really dug it, which he always does
when he wins, which he almost always
does. "It w"as a rough one," he said,
"lots of rocks and all that bad stuff, but
I liked it all the way."
S orne strange characters were seen
lurking around the camps of the Desert
Turtles and Desert Daisys. They were
plainclothes representatives of the Fish
and Game Department and they were
looking for riders who were making off
with the desert wildlife, like Turtles and
Daisys. The penalty is (no joke, now)
$500 fine and 6 months in jail and F
and G is ready to prosecute to the full
extent of the law. So don't take any
Desert Turtles, Jackrabbits, Daisys or
anything else home with you. We got a
letter from a Desert Turtle who said
that desert turtles make very good (if
slightly undomesticated) housepets, but
I think he missed the point. Most guys I
talked to like turtle soup...
Most of the riders who belong to
clubs are becoming quite good about
taking their trash home with them, but
the unaffiliated guys don't seem to be
learning very fast. If you know any of
these guys that don't belong to the
clubs, tell them about keeping the
desert clean. If they leave a mess, the
sponsoring club has to clean it up and
they're usually very, very tired after
having run a race.

At age 10, this now-desert ace was the youngest fInisher of the Cactus Derby
Enduro. Two years later he rode and fInished the Greenhorn Enduro and
combined with his iather to take the Father-Son Trophy. At 13 he did it again at
the Horn, taking th.ird place in the A Trail Bike Class along with another
Father-Son Trophy.
Last December, he rode and won the Trail Bike class in the Laguna Salada 200
Miler all by his lonesome, finishing second overaIl. He returned in February to
the Laguna and teamed with his dad in the 125cc class to fInish fourth overall
behind the likes of Malcolm Smith, Gene Fetty and Preston Petty.
It took this rider only fIve races in the desert to move into the Amateur
ratings. Eleven rides later, he turned Expert. This year, he sports the 29 Expert
number plate. He was first 100 Expert at the Spoke Benders Hare & Hound and
with 20 starts and 18 fInishes thus far, it looks like a pretty good year for Larry
Roeseler, age 14.
