M Basf Beafs Besf; Codr Remains M Cham p iie afeh By Mike Capalite COSTA MESA, CAL., May 28, 1971 After a week layoff because of rain, the speedway riders were more than anxious to have at it tonight at the Orange County Fairgrounds. At the onset, it looked like Rick Woods was going to be the man to bring hom<: the bacon as he looked real good as he won both his heats in the scratch and Handicap events and came back to do the same thing in the semis. Sumner McKnight is about to move up in Speedway. Photo by Dennis Greene But those who thought Rick would have an easy win in the Scratch Main didn't reason with a young man named Mike BasL Last year, Rick's nemisis was Steve Bast, and it looks like this year it is going to be his younger brother Mike. As they lined up in the Scratch Main, Mike Konle and Sonny Nutter nUed the other two slots along with Woods and Bast. As the gate went up, Mike Bast got a beautiful start and was into the first corner side by side with utter, who was really working for this one. As they came out, Bast inched ahead to take the lead with Nuuter right on his rear wheel with Konle in third and Woods fourth. That is the way they stayed the whole race. Ruben Benites may soon lose his 10-yard handicap and find himself back a little further as he won his heat and was able to keep the lead in the main event despite some strong bids by Jim Nicholson and Rick Woods. For nve laps, Ruben was dogged by Jim Nicholson and was able to hold the lead as Jim looked in better control this week as he has switched to a Jawa. On the last lap, Woods had worked his way up into the second spot and was pressing Benites hard for the Handicap Main win. The crowd was on its feet as International Report ••• they came out of the corner in the last lap for the checkered flag as Woods had gotten a wheel under Ruben in the comer and it was all right here at the charge for the line. The fans were screaming at the top of their lungs as they crossed the line with Benites edging Woods out by a mere foot as the fans gave them both rousing cheer on the cool-off lap. The Division Two Main Event went to Sumner McKnight who we will more than likely see in the regular program before long as he took this win from wire to wire with his only opposition being Ed Williams. This race was further spiced by a spill involving three of the riders as Mike Clancy went down in the corner and was struck by Joe Fitzpatrick which caused Nick Nicolaides to lay his down to avoid both of them. Like a Video-tape replay, Bill Cody did it again in the rna tch race as this time he was up against Dave Gifford. Dave was a little anxious on the line as he blasted through the tapes before the gate went up which means immediate disqualification. But Cody waived the default win. and called Dave back for another try. While Dave got off the line looking good, Cody looked a little better and was a little quicker as he blasted into the lead into the corner and kept it for the two laps to take another match win, making him unbeaten in match competition this year.
