Story and Photos by 'Mike Brown SOMIS, CAL., May 2.9 & 30, 1971 SatuTday and Sunday may have been bummers for the beach freaks, but not so for Bay Mare motocross addicts. The gray, partly rainy weekend., plus good upkeep during the races, produced a fast, dust-free course with superior traction. The rider turnout was light, but those who showed came to race; the action never stopped. It was difficult to tell whether Novices, Juniors, 250's or 500's were running; everybody was ligh toing·fast. You had to work to find the winner in the 250 Junior division. Scott Hartley kept fooling everyone by getting hung up in the back of the pack in every moto, then picking off all riders to take first gold. The 500's were so fast, you got neck-strain trying to follow them around. The Novices and Juniors ran together, and Steve Elsbree rode a blistering Bultaco to first overall and first Junior, with Steve Rawson flying low on his Suzuki to pick up second spot. The brunt of the thrills and chills of the day was carried by the 250 Novices, who left bikes and riders strewn around the course. When the bikes and bodies cleared, Frank Kelly had ridden his Yamaha to first place, winning in the last moto over Chuck Ferguson, Bay Mare's track manager, who took the holiday to join the fun and flail. Saturday saw a tight run in the 100 Junior division, with Mike Porter sweeping all three motos on a fast Hodaka, but not without a fight with Larry wheel-to-wheel Hentschd, whose Rickman just couldn't Steve quite pull Porter's Hodaka on the straights. Larry's efforts garnered him 2nd place. The best race of the day Saturday was the foot race to the free beer and soda supplied by Bay Mare Racing Association. Breckenridge, in taking Overall Eliminator honors, bested several Southern California favorites including Neal Macek!, Chuck "Feets" Minert, and Bultaco-mounted Robert Orme and Doug Hall. Orme and Hall entered their 250 Bultacos in both the 250 class and the 500.()pen competition.
