'" By Pete Szilagyi Photo by Richard Creed LOCKHART, TEX.• May 23. 1971 Rohi Holbert, Wayne Booth, and Jack Hicks took home the top cash today at Southwest Motocross Park. The 125 Experts saw another chapter in the continuing Steve Stackable-jack Hicks feud. The pair swapped wins in the first two heats. L, the third moto Hicks' Penton took the checkers first, followed by the Yamaha. of Stackable and Gene Fisher. Don't get too smug. fellas. Rumor has it that speedy Ray Dasch has built himself a super, reed-valved 125 CZ while recovering from his leg injuries. There was a disappointing turnout for the 250 Expert Class with most of the middle motors opting for the Junior bash. Booth cruised to an easy victory after first heat winner Ricky Lloyd lunched his gearbox. Attendance in the 250 Experts should inc, rease shortly because several top Juniors are ready to get their feet wet racing with the money boys. Bill Kasson debuted the new 380 CZ in Texas by copping a third in the Open class behind Jack DeBoe and Holbert. Kasson. Scott Elliot, DeBoe. and Dave Dismukes swapped places continually as they chased the lightning-quick Holbert around the rocky track. Robi was almost unable to finish the last moto because of an eye injury from a flying rock. but he managed to hold on to the big Husky for four more laps to ensure his overall victory. A University of Texas student, Dismukes, impressed all who have followed his racing career as U . " !I' INDOOR ST IN HOUSTON .. TEX., May 16,1971 - David Peterson came all the way from Silver City. New Mexico, to pick up the top cash in the 250 Expert class today. Peterson set the stage by putting his Ossa in the lead on the first lap of the first moto. Although pushed hard by Dick Wingfield on a.Maico and Bryan Treadway on a Montesa he was never headed. The second moto was again a wire to wire run for Peterson. Winfield pulled in second and Treadway third. The final mo to started like a replay of the first two until Peterson dropped it near the end of the first lap. Treadway went on to win the moto with Bill Wight second on a CZ. After a little difficulty in restarting Peterson was able to move up through the pack and pick up a third. This was all he needed for the overall win. Treadway and Wingfield took home second and third place money. The Open Expert class was very similar to the 250 class in that Lanny Wilson led the first two motos from start to finish, but he also had trouble in the third. Forgetting to tum the gas on he found himself trailing the pack in the first lap. Quickly remedying the situation, however. Lanny was able to power his big Suzuki into the lead for a clean sweep for the day. Dick Wingfield (Mako) and Jon Wilson (CZ) took second and third. Conspicuously missing from today's Open class action was lIat7y West who injured his foot last week at the La Laguna track. Cliff Atchley. who claims Forida as . his home but is presently stationed at Fort Bliss. rode his reed valve Bultaco to a clean sweep in the 125 Expert class. Placing second and third were Tom Wabler (Bul) and David Spencer (Pen). Another cle'\ll sweep was scored in the 100 Expert class where Dave Miller riding a Harold Tiede·man tuned Hodaka easily turned back all comers. This little machine really runs and Miller did right by his tuner. never being headed the entire day. Many local racers have mentioned that they would like to see the newly formed New Mexico Racing Team at some of the EI Paso area races. Maybe they will soon.
