THOMAS RETURNS TO TOP SCRAMBLES FORM .,; By Sportphoto ~ HANFORD, CAL., May 21, 1971 Almost 300 sportsman scrambles racers were on hand tonight to participate in a beautifully organized race. The Kings County M.C., howe-ver, seem to specialize in the unusual, promoting some of the most smoothly run races in the district on a perfectly prepared track, all with a very small membership roster. One of the hotter races of the evening was the 500cc Expert. Ron Keener led into the first turn with Tim Thomas, Jack Jones and Don Harrell nipp;ng right at his heels. Thomas, 100kIDg and riding like the Tim Thomas of two years ago, found an opening and moved past Keener in the second turn, then proceeded to develop open space between himself and the pack. Keener, ~ ~ w z W ..J o > o meanwhile, was having problems as J ones slipped by in the last turn of the second lap, then Harrell on a wailing 441 got by in the ftrst turn of the third lap. Everything fmally got to be too much for Ron and he fell in the second turn of lap three. Ron's fall seemed to trigger a whole series as in the following right hander Jones lost it, then Harrell fell in the succeeding last turn. ·N eeciless to say, there were- massive changes in the order, with Harvey Baker moving into 2nd, followed by Leonard Reed and Jim Conway. Thomas, with a comfortable lead, was giving a great display of riding ability, sliding through the turns and carrying the front wheel in the straights. At no time did Tim seem to be suffering a lack of horsepower, yet his Montesa had a muffler attached to his expansion Tim Thomas leads the charge during the Friday night Sportsman Scrambles sponsored by the Kings County M.e. at Hanford. CZ chamber. Sure would be nice if this started a trend in this area. Art Carter showed the 200cc Jumors his rear wheel for over two laps, although Greg Henson and Bobby Williamson were right behind. Finally, going into the second turn of lap three, Art made just enough of an error to give Greg room to go around and into the lead. Greg claUns his Kawasakj is stock except for the pipe, which is really hard to believe after seeing it go. Greg held the lead to the checkered, ahead 01 Carter, Williamson, Jerry Lessley, Adam Pollok and Wminutive lUrby Shropshire. Andy Skeel, Bruce Prior and Jim Maupin, all from the Amateur-Expert class were ben t over between races trying to get things together. Jamey Blunt didn't e-ven make it, to the line in the 100cc class. The 250cc Amateur.Expert class saw some real dicing between Doug Mason, Skjp Gallagher and J amey Blunt. In the second moto after running three across, Doug broke loose and Skip and Jamey made like Siamese twins up and down and all around. On the last turn, Skjp got through to take the second spot. Doug also added the 100cc Amateur·Expert class to his win bag topping Vince Graves and Mike Du BonL Jim J ob.nson went home a happy man as he picked up his fIrSt trophy in the 125cc DivIDon 1 c1ass. Mark Reichert picked up a Perris Amateur rating by winning Divwon n. Blunt kept his win streak alive in the 175-200cc class. It was one of the biggest fields all season and J amey came from bebIDd every time and then stretched it ouL Danny Horton was second and N. Winstron third. Rick Hutchins held off a strong charge from last week's winner Tom Avoian to win the First Divis;on of 250cc Novices. The last moto saw Tom get through for the win but it was too late. Everett Harvey was third. Nate Ezell took advantage of Walt Foster's problems to pull out the win in the second Novice go. Thanks to Walt, Larry Whjtaker and Ron Bair each moved up the ladder and made it to the winner's circle. The Novice moto had all kIDds of riders coming off the line. Foster got it lined out fIrSt and kept out of traffic. Jack McCafferty and Rick Bair had all the fun of running with the pack. Jeff Sexton came from behind in the fIrSt two motos of the Big Bike moto. In the third moto things were a little different as Bob Greenstreet changed the format by taking llrst and kickIDg dirt in Jeff's face for a change. Skip Gallgher rounded out the field.
