Hopkins Tops Trojan Card (Continued from page 2) Cl> .... - PRO >I-Mile, Agajanian Enterprises, Inc. Corona (Ca.1 Raceway. 8 pm, $1200 purse. Free parking. 714/735-1705. .. c: MX SCHOOL, John DeSoto. Forest Glade Cycle Sports Park, Corpus Christi, Tex . ai By Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL" May 27, 1971 A small but highly enthusiastic crowd of Trojan Renegades Club motorcycle racing fam who chanced threatening thunder clouds and possible rain showers, were treated to some of the best short track bike action seen this season at Trojan Speedway as Dale Hopkins of El Monte, Calif., outclassed his field in winning both the 250 class F.T. and 'IT Main Events tonight. Tigh 1, competitive racing seemed to be the key for the surprising night of . events that held the fans in their seats right down to the final checkered flag when Hopkins and his Steve's Bultaco, chased Ossa mounted Dave Arrambide in the flat track main to finally inch ahead in the final 100 feet and win by a wheel. As if this was not enough, John Caldwell (Yam), who had been penalized to the back of the pack by starter Bob Schoeman for jumping the flag at the start, needled his way through the 10-rider field in one of the evening's top performances to finish fourth behind Mike Clarke (Bul). Hopkins, defending 125 'IT and F,T. champion, appears as a solid bet to win this year's title in the 250 class after making a clean sweep by winning both 'IT and F.T. heats, and the F,T. trophy dash. No question about it, but the South Gate oval is perhaps one of the best training tracks for Juniors and Novices anywhere in the state of California. Already, Trojan has produced many of today's - top riders, and here tonight, Don Wright sponsored by Maywood Honda, appears as another bright prospect by virtue of his fine top efforts, Anytime you pressure Bob Sanders (Kaw) battling for the lead, you have to be at your best. lIut the Lynwood, Calif., youngster looked as cool as he chased Sanders in the 125 'IT Main to finish second behind the f1ash. Track president, Rene Armenta, announced that effective immediately, a $300 purse would be guaranteed to all Seniors making the weekly Thursday night events, Trophies will continue to be presen ted to all Juniors and Navices. Despite the numerous spills throughout the 20-event program, none of the riders involved received any injuries on the fast fifth-mile clay oval (Results on page 24) :> .., ~ SAT. & SUN., JUNE 12 & 13 MX, Oak Creek Ranch. $1000 purse. $3 entry, adm. $2. 11 am 10 mi.
