.Australian speedway rider, Garry
Middleton, has. topped the list of
qualifiers for the British semi-finals of
the
1971
~orld
Ch@1Pionshjp
competition - the first stage of the
compe,tition for the top English,
Scottish, .Australian and New Zealand
riders competing in the Old Country.
The 32 challengers to Ivan Mauger's
World Crown were schedUled to contest
two se~.fmals at Wes"t Ham (Lonpon)
and Sheffield (North of England) this
past weekend.
The top eigh t from each meeting will
go forward to the British Final at
Coventry on June' 30. Th·e.leading eight
point scorers from that meeting' will
'then crash with· the best :uom
Scanciinavia in the British/Nordic Final
at Glasgow (Scotland) on july 36,
Fr9m th.ere th'e .top men progress -to
the European Final at Wernbley
Stadium, London, on Aug. 21. There
they meet the best from the Continent
and the top ten from the Werobley
meeting qualify for ti)e big World Final
itself at Gothenb,;,rg, Sweden, on Sept.

10. Six local Swedish riders will be
seeded straight through to the Final
after a series of elimination rounds in
the Land of Lakes.
Of the 32 "British" contenders left in
the chase, there are five Australians, five
New Zealanders, three Scotsmen and 19
Englishmen.
Among
them
are
Californian favourites Ivan Mauger (the
reigning World Champion), Barry Briggs,
Bert HarkinB.and Jim Airey. All stand a
good ch~ce of progressing to the I)ext
stage WIthout too much '. bother,
although p&,pular Scot Harkins has been
"slightly haropered" so far this season
by riding 'with his fractured wrist in
plaster! However it takes more than a
mere broken bone to keep a gO,od
speedwa.y rider do.wn!
The LOjI. Angeles Chapter of ·the
American Federation of Motorcyclists
·has a racing class for single cylinder
motorcycles. The Thumper Class was
instituted to prov'ide a competitive race
for machines that ..e now out-dated.

by winning the first motocross leg in the
250 Sr. 'class. He then unloaded hard in
the second ·and got up slowly, jumped
on his scooter and wailed. His
maneuvers garnished him the overall
win.
The 250 Jrs. ran a combined class
with Yamaha mounted Keith Mertz
putting together a first moto win with a
pair of seconds in the remaining two to
take the win. Ron Palmer .and Mike
Davies squared off in the last two by
each winning one with Davies taking
overall second. Palmer, with second leg
problems, was aced OlLt of third by
.Roger Stagg.
Fat AI pulled out the pin in the Open
In. and won the 2nd and 3rd motos to
take the class overall. Agile Husky'er
Greg Winkel, the f!rs.t moto winner,
tucked in for 2nd in the .elDllinders to
finish righ t behind AL ~.
After the water crew put in a few
puddles, Water'· White. found 'one
. slippery b""", .to his"Hn,lif,ipg as he s1,id
out but remounted. and 'blasted to a
second ~oto'win '1iioid luck waS again
with him in the thir4- when Iiis throttle
'cable snapped, ·Ieaving him with .only
enough points for secpnd overall behind
third moto winner Dav~ Milliken.
