Blackwen BurlS DUles Course Monthly Show Draws Taos fans TAOS, N.M., May 2, 1971 - The second points race of the season at Coyote Raceway had a smaller rider turnout, but all put on a good show for the more than 1000 spectators present. The competition was hot in each class and the surprise win of the day was little Mark Olson from Santa Fe, N.M., on a 125 Yamaha, who swept the 0-200 Novice class with three wins. The only threat Mark had was in the fll'st heat when Bruce 13 olander on a 100 Penton held the lead until his gear box gave out. ' Ken Barnkot (Yam) and Jeff Kehberg (Yam) followed Mark to the flag. The 201-0pen ovices was won by Gary Lofton (Yam) from Colorado who should be in the Expert ranks 'in no time. Wes Smith (Mon) and Mike Fuller (Hus) hotly pursued Lofton. The 100 Experts' Wayne Peacock (Hon) came up with the right combination (1-2-1) for the overall number one slot while Lawrence Olguin and Larry McDowell fought it out for the second place trophy which Olguin (Hod) even tually won. In the 125 Expert Jimmy Southern (Bul) went all the way in each moto as he got a good start and held it to the checkered flag. Second was Gilbert Padilla (Hon) and third was Jim Smith (DKW). As they sailed off the down hill jump in the first 250 moto, it was local Phil Ormerod (C-Z) leading RicharQ. Cooke and the pack. On the third lap, however, he bent a foot peg, hut still managed to hold onto first. The second moto was a different story as Cooke (Mon) flew into the lead with Ormerod trailing in 2nd; it stayed that way. The final commenced with Cooke in the lead, Gary Pulkka and Ormerod following and at the final tally, Cooke held off Ormerod with Pulkka just edging out Duane Russell (Ossa) for the 3rd spot. The Open class pitched Gary Burns on his new 400 Maico and Jack Sona (Hus) into a battle for the top spot. The Maico had the edge for frrst with Sona taking a second and his brother, Jan (Hus) pulling in 3rd. The J ackalopes M.C. of Taos sponsors these motocross races on the first Sunday of each month. The course was a very demanding one. The first five miles were nothing but a series of whoop-dee-doos which turned into some nice hills and rocks. The back section was very fast and late in the race turned quite dusty. ext came a series of motocross style jumps which took a heavy toll on the riders. Of the 116 riders starting, however, 60 caugh t the checkered. Rex Frehner took top honors aboard a 250 Ossa. A distant second was Bill Hill, who fll'st thought he'd won since he saw no dust in front of him. Danny Davis, winner of the 125 Amateur "-lass, also took home the Sweepsta~e trophy, measuring 3112 feet high. ..aJa wins again! It was during the contesting of the first moto that Holcomb got hooked-up into a scorching front end duel with Rodgers. The two racers were side by side for the better part of six laps until the Bultaco bombshell was able to pull out for the eventual victory. While running a "noise extinguisher" at the business end of his stinger, Jim Cooke rode a CZ to an over-aU victory in the 250cc Senior, grabbing two wins and a third. He turned back Rodgers (Bul) andJohn Pavich (CZ). Greg Blackwell (Pen) and Larry Hentschel (Ric) were the big winners over the 100cc J uruor clan. While Greg Robertson (CZ) and Tim Ford (Bul) garnered the 125 flags. The 250 Juniors were trounced by Dick Davis (CZ) and John Egizi (CZ), and the Open Juniors couldn't fmd Steve Rauch (CZ) for three straight events. Indian Dunes will be featuring a Team Race for a $2000 purse this Memorial Day weekend. (Results on page 26) NEW & USED SALES CD 'HUSQVARNA s By John Grout Photo by Racing Photos VALENCIA, CAL., May 16, 1971 Look out Europe! A one-man invasion is about to grab a hold of you! It was none other than Dave Bickers who told this writer three years ago, during the "Flying Circus" combat in this country, "For the first few laps, your chaps are equally as good as ours. But, I think they're trying too hard; they get tired too early... " And Bickers is a man who ought to know - he's a Motocross World Champion. Well, Dave, hang loose. America has got a -young man, just l8-years old, and he's about to set sail in your direction. He doesn't try too hard, he's about as fast as a shooting comet, he doesn't make many mistakes; his name is Mark Blackwell - and he has a seldom seen drive to chew up anything that happens to be on the same ractrack at the same time that he's on it. Young Mark wouldn't have to have to have done a whole helluvalot on the Senior Open ticket at Indian Dunes Park this Sunday as far as most every paying spectator at the old reservation was concerned. Not only did Blackwell win all three of the open motos - by wide margins, but also at the end of the wh·ole affair, he displayed the' kindness to offer his cannon ball-of-a-Husqvarna on the for-sale block to some lucky dude of a buyer. Blackwell completely buried a top field of serious competitors, among which were Jim Wilson (CZ), Tim Hart (Mai), Jim Dawson (Yam) and John Rice (Mai). Not only did he bury them; but if every single one of them didn't kick in a little loot to help send the "Phan tom n on his European sojourn, they've got to be living in a different world than that which we call home. We'll be missing Mark for a few months, but the Europeans are going to dislike us immensely for our out-going generosity. In the 125 Senior motos, Dave Rodgers on his rocket-fast Bultaco had his hands filled with the likes of Bryar Holcomb on a sparkling new Bonanza, Eddie Cole and Don Emler on Rickman machinery, Tom Zahnter (Hod), Rice (Puc), and Jim Dawson (Yam).
