...... - .... CD 1 200 Drawn to Deadman's Motocross ... ~ '" ..: ~ .. By Dave Brown Photo by Mike McLeod APPLE VALLEY, CAL., May 16, 1971 - It started off to be another one of those beautiful days in the desert, until the Santa Ana winds came up. Over 200 riders turned out for the regu1arly scheduled races at Deadman's Point, and the only major problem turned out to be the wind, which got pretty heavy by the end of the day. Promoter Bob Dresslar's strict enforcement of the "No Pit Riding - At AU" rule disqualified 9 riders, some of them being class·winners. In one of the faster 100 Jr. races, Jim Rich brought his potent Suzuki in for another decisive victory. Jim will now be riding with the Intermediates. There were several other rid'ers that have now garnered enough brass in the Junior class, and are being moved up to the Intermediates. All the winners in the 250 Junior races had solid victories with Division I falling to K. Bowser on his CZ, Division II going to R. Berkeley with three c: .., ::0 ~ w Z w ..J U > U excellent rides aboard his Maico, and Division ill falling to Husky mounted H. Fletcher. The 100 Intermecijate class was captured by desert ace, Brad Bridges on his powerful little SuzukL Frank Wilsford Sr., once again, took home the gold in the 100 Senior class aboard his Hodak&, but when Bridges moYeS up, Frank is going to have his hands full. The 125 Intermediate class was soundly trounced by young Von Peterson on his DKW with Jim Travis bringing his Yamaha in for second. Von reported that his older brother, Lonnie, will be retiring from army duty and returning to California in about three months. Larry Watkins brought his DKW out, and put on a beautiful display of cross-ups over the jumps, earning along the way the first place gold in the 125 Senior class. In the 250 Intermediate 'class, Dennis Dickens kept his CZ close behind the Seniors to manage first Intermediate JAMEY BLUNT: .A POOPED WINNER By Elaine Jones PERRIS, CAL., May 15, 1971 - Jamey Blunt went home pooped Saturday night but also took two win trophies and a third place finish for his efforts. The first win came in the 100cc Amateur-Expert class. He was pushed hard by this year's Perris Ultra-lightweight High Point winner, Mike DuBonL Jamey almost lost everything when he unloaded in the final moto but managed to get back together and rmish. The 175·200cc class has been Jamey's since the season began and Saturday was no exception. His third place rmish came in the 250cc Amateur.Expert class. Dennis Creason and Doug Mason decided that they weren't going to be the final jewel in Jamey's triple crown. Creason started out slow this year but is really starting to shape up. Mason was the king of the mountain in this class so Dennis upset two applecarts with his win. Ken Miller rode himself in to the Amateur-Expert Big Bike class and did it with a broken thumb suffered during practice. Second place Gary Shafter pushed hard and it was one of the few times recently Ken has had to play catch up. Jack McCafferty was third. Lonesome George Gillespie really was in the final moto of the Amateur-Expert Big Bike class. In the final race when they crossed the finish line it was George and Freddie Corley. Andy Skeel had problems all night and didn't make it to the final go. Bob Greenstreet had one win going and was working on his second when his chain came off. He still managed to hold on to third.
