silt that pushing the last ten feet was common. And there were some uncommonly fine whoop-de-doos that were just plain bone wearying. And what in the last analysis is always the killer, there was no place to rest. You can ride almost indefinitely if there's a stretch every now and then where you can sit down on the seat and ride relaxed. By the end, Gene Cannady was still in first, but Terry Clark had dropped back quite a ways. Gene Smith on a Triumph was second and Mike Patrick on a Ymaha was third and flfSt lightweight. Clark, of course, got first Trailbike, but he was down about 15th overall. Right behind him was Eric Jensen on a 125 DKW. In the Amateur brigade, Arvie Blackstone took the Heavyweight trophy with 11th overall on a Yamaha and Charles Vandervoorde took the 250 Amateur with 13th overall on a Husky. We were unahle to identify the first Novice in, but his number was 297M and he was .6lst overall. The second loaded up two strok.ea, tear-jerking crashea and other assorted problems that occurred just prior to the !lrd check, which. was, coincidentally, just over the hill.) That hill might have been classed as "error in judgment" except that, if the Antelope Ramblers were going to use that first loop at all, they had to use the hill. It was the only reasonable way into the pits. My own opinion, for whatever its worth, is that it was a very good course, though I didn't finish either. None of the riders had any complaints about the marking or any of the other technical aspects of the race. The club used some territory that hasn't been used for a race for two or three years now which many riders appreciate. It's nice to get on trails that haven't been beat and worn to a frazzle. They set up a course that might honestly - be called a rider's course. Either you can dig it or you can't. I liked it and I also appreciated the cooperation the club gave me in getting the results. Novice Heavyweight was Le Roy Davis who rode a 400 Husky. First Novice Lightweight was Dixie Sanders on a Bultaco and second was Reynold M. Boggie on an Ossa. First Trail Novice was Larry Deck on a Hodaka. Opinion about the race was strongly divided. Quite a few guys thought it was one of the best of the year. A lot of the guys thought it stunk and they so quite loudly. This writer suspects that whether or not a guy finished had a lot to do with his opinion of the course. 'The big thing was, of course, the second, most difficult hill that so many riders failed to get up. (Nobody that I talked to said he couldn't get up that hill, but there was the damndest collection of seized engines, flat tires, Factory Direct 1st Quality Leathers By Ed and Jim Drechsler PERRIS, CAL., May 23, 1971 - A brand new club (utilizing the original Lightweights' existing charter and name) devoted exclusively to TT races. put on a successful firs.t race today. The club is comprised of enthusiastic riders who are trying to re-kindle interest in ths sport. The day consisted of lots of ridings, drawings for helmets and other goodies, and consolation races for losers of all classes with prizes awarded. Unfortunately, a misunderstanding over the definition of class C traction caused a protest to be filed with the District 37 Spons Committee. J =y Burton's preparation of the track was superb making it super-fast with a minimum of repairs being required. Good Guy of the Day was Steve Lowell (Mon), who in the 500 Novice semi·main rode his bike into the tires in the main sweeper to aid fallen No. 95 who had his legs pinned under his BSA and was unable to move. Steve removed the bike, offered aid, and after assuring himself that every thing was under control continued with the race. SHe... ' ' ' . , NEW "MOLL Y·BLUE" chain lube and a new 2 cycle oil. (213) 361-5832 8 YWHA of COIOIA =- Mike Patrick's John~ MOTO-CROSS LEATHERS .~ Several hotly contested races marked the day. During the second moto of the 175-200 Ex., Steve Poindexter (Hon) came from a last place start to grab second place. The 125 Nov. Main was a thriller with Scott Smith (Yam) leading to the third lap. Out of nowhere came Bob Sanders (Kaw) to challenge Scott. Bob pressured all the way to the wire only to fihish second. The third 175-200 Jr. moto was won by Jamey Blunt (Oss). Jamey had mechanical problems after leading into the third lap and was passed. Evidentally the problem corrected itself as Jamey was able to regain the lead in the same lap and go on to a great finish. The 250 Novice Main had Terry Stanford (BuI) and Richard Trait (Oss) fighting for second place. They swapped positions each lap until the leader dropped out of the race. Terry won this one with Trait close on his heels. Kay Bench won two of her three motos to take overall first in the Powder Puff division. Kay won one of her motos by corning up all the way from last place. The most fantastic race of the day was the 500 Novice Main Event with Taylor Sisco (Mai) winning by a large maJ:gin over the second place man, Brian McMillan (Yam). Taylor was running unofficial lap times of 40 seconds with the closest times of the day put in by the 650 Jr/Ex. boys (41 seconds). It doesn't look like Taylor will have to stay a 500 ovice much longer as he has won the last three point races down this way. The second 500 Jr/Ex./ moto provided thrills with Jeff Sexton (Mai) and Scott Smith (Yam) dicing for the lead. In the third lap, Scott took. the lead and never gave it up again. Bob' Greenstreet (Tri) held off the constant attack of George Gillespie (Yam) in the Open Nov/Jr. motos. These races were just close enough to make Bob try a little harder.
