They greeted 105 riders and probably the last District 38 desert race for a few months as the temperature was in the 90's. Even with a 9 a.m. start the heat was very noticeable. The banner dropped exactly at 9 with the Experts in all classes starting from a dead engine start. The Tovices in all classes left abbut two minutes later. Mickey Quade on a Husky was first to the smoke bomb followed closely by Scott King on a Montesa and Ken Renick (Hus). The first loop was a very fast 35 miles with lots of miles of sand washes and pole-line roads. At the end of the first loop King was in the lead followed closely by Renick and Quade. The second loop was as hard as he first loop was easy, with 17 miles of tight, twisty, mud hills that were really rough. Scott King, the leader, started dropping back with Renick and Quade passing him. Later it was found out that the heat had gotten to King and made him sick. Don McCarly on a new Suzuki really got it going on the second loop after having some trouble with a mud hole on the first loop. He passed tiring King and caught Renick and Quade to take the lead at the end of the second loop. The third loop was run on the same fast loop as the first. McCarly, leading, somehow got off the course, and Quade, who had taken over second place after Renick lost it on an uphill, came into the finish line first overall and first Open Expert. McCarly relocated the course fast enough to take second overall with Renick capturing third overall. Mike Harper (Bul) was sixth overall and first 250 Expert. First Novice overall was John McDonald putting in a fantastic ride getting past all but ten Experts after a late start. And he did this on a 100 Kawasaki. True. Sounds like a Terry Clark trick! First Open Novice was J. Vissat and frrst 125 Novice was Ron Foley on a DKW.
