Gary Scott, by far and away the best Junior rider in the nation in any category, fmally got his chance to compete against the Experts in the 250cc short track program. AMA rules stipulate that all classes will ride as one and it give the Novice and Junior riders a chance to show what they can do against the Experts. Scott moved up consistently toward the main with three wins and held the pole position for the main_ The others to make the mai .. were Novices Scott Brelsford, Steve Nichols and Gary Caldwell messed in with Experts Gene Romero, Dave Aldana, Frank Gillespie and Dallas Baker. Rueben Benites made it a sweep for Rickman team, taking second in the 125 Senior class. Baron and Benites took first and second respectively in the first and second motos. Their only opposition coming from David Boydstun in the third moto. The combined 250 Intermediate and Senior classes put on spectacular racing. Baron, Benites, (Husky this time), Bob Maynard (Maico), and Morris Malone (AjS) jumped ahead of the pack. Baron led Benites who then seized his engine, letting Maynard take his place. Malone stayed on Maynard's tail the whole way waiting for a mistake that never came. In the third moto, Maynard took the lead with Baron in second, Malone in third. After four laps, Maynard lost a chain and did not finish. A lap later Baron's engine loaded up in a tight tum. This dropped him to fifth at the finish and Malone took the win. Baron was the 250 Senior winner and Malone was the 250 Intermediate winner of the day. Rick Williams from Yuma, Arizona tried a little California racing and won the 125 junior class on a Sachs, er, DKW. His long drive was rewarded with a Premier helmet.
