For You? problem as the licensing. because a combination spark-arrester-silencer can be purchased from J & R and fit to the machine with little modification. When I buy an enduro bike I look at a lot of little things. The speedometer, can it be set backwards and forwards by tenths? Yep. It's a genuine VDO, the best there is for enduro work. The footpegs, will they have to be reworked? Nope, they're very sturdy, non-slip folding pegs and positioned just right. Is the gas tank big enough? 2.2 gallons, enough for 80 miles with a cup left over. Better than most. Does it have a skidplate? Yep, but it's not a ve'ry good one. I'd bolt an aluminum plate to it to b.etter protect the side cases. How about the hand controls? Clutch and brake levers are Magura. Very good. The choke has been left in place, very good. No kill button, not good at all. Some steel number plates are supplied with the machine which is nice, but the edges are very sharp. I'd either replace them with plastic ones or shield the edges somehow. The exhaust unit works extremely well, but it gets in the way of your leg. You, can't get your right foot all the wayan the peg. I'd change this, but lots of guys don't. There are no security bolts in the tires on the theory that you can change a tire that doesn't have security bolts while on the trail. It can be argued either way, but I like security bolts so I rate that a minus feature. If a bike has security bolts you can ride it many miles on a > " ::< ~ w Z W ...J () > () Blasting up out of a drainage ditch with near·vertical walls. Penton had plenty of power and was sure-footed as a cat. flat. If it doesn't the tires will pop off the rim or shred. One very nice touch is a hinged gas tank top that you can open while you're riding, without taking your gloves off. You won't drop it and you can get it closed again, There you have it, the Penton Eunduro, desinged and built by champions. Altogether, an excellent machine with a few real faults, a few things I personally didn't like. I can't" sum it up any better than this: I ride enduros almost every weekend and the Penton is one of only three, or possibly four machines that I personally would own out of possibly 75 so-called enduro bikes. Here's something else to consider: I received the Penton and immediately started putting rough miles on it. Before I had finished I had ridden a very rough, very wet enduro. Nothing failed! And there was no out of the ordinary preparation at alL Of all the motorcycles that I've owned 'and all that I've road tested, none could come close to this, and that includes the road bikes! All have had some failure or other before the test was over and most had to be taken back to the shop for work before the test could be c,?mpleted. - New desert demonstration rides: Suzuki 400 MX; BSA 500 MX; AJS Stormers; Montesa Cappras SUZUKI CITY I nglewood, Calif.
