NATIONAL MOTORCYCLE IS WATCHING NOW As the popularity of motorcycle competition grows, so does the need for organizations such as'Rescue 3 and the International Racing Radio Crew. The newcst among these is the National Motorcycle Patrol. Like the others, the Patrol is a volunteer, non-profit organization that will render First-Aid and rescue operations to victims of motorsport accidents, and will promote safety. Operating in the northern California area, each Patrolman carries a current Red Cross Advanced or Instructors First-Aid, is probably active in racing, and is quite familiar with all the problems surrounding accidents. Bill Sunderland, an enthusiast as well as insurance underwriter, currently heads up the organization and expresses an interest in expanding into other parts of thc state. He also spends a lot of time at local legislative hearings to remind councilmen of the responsibility motorcyclists accept within their own ranks. "r go to some meeting nearly every nigh L When they start to put a curb on a supposedly dangerous sport, I stand up and remind them of our activities. They are surprised to find out an organization like the Patrol exists." The Patrol does not solicit or accept money, donations, any other form of compensation for first aid rendered. Classes for over 40 & under 16 1st race at 9:00 Info: (213) 370-8234 or (714) 7354641 By Gale Deck BrSHOP, CAL., April 18, 1971 - In spite of cold weath er and gusty winds more than 1000 spectators and 126 riders gathered for Bishop's second race of the year. Exciting races, one immediately after the other occurred as the Seniors competed for $500 in cash and the Juniors for fine brass. Randy McCoy of Bishop took onJim Heath of Inglewood, Calif. In the second moto Jim won by just almost a bike-length but the first and third motos were all Randy's; The third mota was his by some 45 seconds. Some say his throttle stuck open when he carne off the line, others say he's just quick, at any rate his 400 Husky is fast. The 250 Sr, class saw Dave Rodgers of Simi, Ca, takc home first place money. It was quite apparent that his new Bultaco gave him no trouble, and it was a good thing because Dave Williams of Ridgecrest, Ca" and his Yamaha we,re right on Rodgers' tail most of the time, but had to settle for second. Again Randy McCoy was there, this time on his 250 Husky, and he took home third place money. My friend Jerry Eyre (Fat AI) carne up from Ridgecrest with one intent, to win, and win he did. That CZ must get max-trac when 01' AI scoots back on )he seat then dials it on. I know Mike Hamel and his 360 CZ are fast but all he could do is chase Jerry all day_ Mike did take home second place brass in the Open Jr. class just abead of Husky-mounted Greg Wincel from China Lake, Ca. Fat AI is about five feet short and two hundred fifty pounds ligh t. (Results on page 26) REVIEW BOARD UPHOLDS DISQUALIFICATIONS WORTHINGTO., OHIO, April 30, 1971 - Chairman of the Competition Congress, Russ March, met with two members of the Congress, Paul Schlegel and Gunnar Lindstrom, today to review the protest filed by Ron Pierce and Jody Nicholas who were disqualified in the 125-Mile AMA National at Atlanta, Ga., on April 25. Referee Charlie Watson had disqualified the two Suzuki team riders from the results of the event because they had established their pit area on turn seven of the track, on the opposite end of the course from the designated pit area_ After reviewing the case March, Schlegel and Lindstrom upheld Watson's decision, dcnying the filed appeal by the pair. In addition, Pierce's license was suspended for 15 days due to his actual use of the pit crew when he stopped and took on fuel. Nicholas never stoppcd, but was signalled by the crew to do so; he ran out of gas before reaching the pits. The reasons given for the decision came from the AMA Professional Competition Rule Book, Chapter XVII, Scction B, Rule I, allowing a referee to take action against any rider guilty of specific rule infractions H or any other conduct detrimen tal to the meeL" Watson's report on the event states that he considered the action to be detrirnentalto the safety of the race_ T rade Topics BMW HIRES PR MAN Richard A.
