Roberts Again
RIDGECREST, CAL., May 6,
1971 - J.N. Roberts scored the
overall win in this year's Mother's
Day Hare .Scrambles, a fun filled
race for most but an unhappy day
for Desert No.1, Whitey Martino
who crashed and landed in the
hospital. On pages 16 and 17
you'll find the full story of this
annual X-rated event, including a
blow·by-blow description of Tom
Poteet crossing the hairy ravine at
\ 60-plus, and how J.N. blew
everybody into the weeds.
New 'Feature
Beginning with this issue, Cycle
News presents a series of
consumer reports on different
products. Unl ike "tests", these
products have been pu rchased and
used over a greater length of time
than
usually
allowed
on
"borrowed" products. The first
consu mer report is on the 1971
Ossa Pioneer, which appears on
page 3. Also, Ron Schneiders has
put together a test of the new
125cc Penton, but it is a little
different. See why on pages 6 and
7.
Lackey Stars
Brad Lackey, who went to the CZ
factory in Europe approximately one
month ago to take a school offered by
the firm, wound up staying in Europe as
a member of the GZ Factory tearn
participating
in
the
World
Championship Series.
Last week, he participated. in the
Polish Grand Prix, his first GP and
finished 13th overall which, according
to the FIM, is the best finish by any
rider ever in his first GP. It was also
stated that it was the highest an
American has ever finished in a GP.
The Northern Californian will remain
in Europe and continue to race in the
remaining World Championship events.
Since the break for the Viewfinders Grand Prix at Indian Dunes on April 18,
J.N. Roberts has taken command of the desert. In the three races since the
GP, he has ridden each and won each, his last coming Sunday at the Red
Dots M.C. Flare Scrambles. At this present rate, Roberts can lock up the
Number One desert plate before the year is half·over. A report on his latest
deed can be found on pages 16 and 17.
