On a little sandy uphill Minert blasted into the lead. Lap after lap Minert bounded along in the lead with Cram and Fishback fighting like a couple of school kids. It sure looked like Mister BSA was going to thump in for the win, but such was not the case. Even guys with a lot of ex,perience get off now and then, and Minert picked a bad time to do it. Just as he came to the last lap flag he stepped off and Cram moved into that number one spot. Marty Tripes made a clean sweep of the 250 Expert class. Marty kept his red . > ~ ~ w Z W ..J <.J > <.J Rickman out in front without too much difficulty but Maico riders Dave Smith and Bob Maynard stayed close enough behind to keep him busy. Murray Hoffman grabbed the win in the 125cc Expert class even though he coasted into the finish line in the last moto with a broken throttle cable on his Sachs. Hoffman's competition came in the form of Suzuki-mounted D. Boydstun who took second place honors and Bultac<>-mounted Randy Myers who wound up third. Next week the C.M.C. will move their motocross show south to Carlsbad for another day of fun and games in the motocross arena. By John Shedd POMONA, CAL., May 2, 1971 - Yes sir, the old man of motocross dum near snatched the win away from C.M.C.'s number one rider Mike Cram. 01' Feets ain't really old; He can still blowout all his birthday candles. He's been first past more checkered flags than these youngins' have even seen and I don't think you'll find many other Catalina winners giving these young gladiators a hard way to go. Chuck Minert does and he does it quite regularly. First 500cc Expert moto went to Cram on his Maico. BSA-mounted Minert (as if he would ride anything else) and CZ-mount6d Jim Fishback kept Cram on his toes all the way. In the second go there was Cram, again out in front showing everybody how he earned that number-one plate. Minert was breathing fire on Cram's knobby while Fishback, two days back from Europe, was doing everything but cartwheels to get past the dueling duo. He finally picked off Minert and set his sigbts for Cram when somewhere on the back side of the course, Feets done 'em in! Even Feets wasn't sure just how he got by, but ne did. (Now I may be just a little bit sentimental 'cause I don't usually care who wins, but I do like a close race. It makes my he;u-t skip a beat 'to bear those fOUT-stroke machines out in the lead, thumping along, though.) In the final leg Cram did his usual .., ·500 Intermediate G. Evidently he is getting along just fine with his new Maico ride, sweeping both the 250 and 500 classes. Teammate Mike Cram held down a second in the 500's, with the mysterious Jim Wilson finally making the program in the third spot. [ORSTEN HALLMAl(l~~J RACING INC. :;~. Bruce Baron, riding with a handful of stitches from last week's Indian Dunes boo-boo, came close to a twin win. Baron geared his Mon tesa-powered Rickman to take second behind DeSoto in the 250 bash and earlier, in the 125's, took a decisive victory over B. Hosford. Scott Hoffee and Don Emler tied for third. The 100 Juniors put on one of the best shows this year. T. Metzger and J. Reggi, Honda vs. Hodaka, went jump-for-jump and tum-for-tum until Metzger emerged the victor.
