N .. > :E ~ w Z W ...J o > o Grossi Does It In AMXT Fest By David Swift LIVERMORE, CAL., May 2, 1971 For the second week in a row th e country's finest motocrossen congregated for a benefit of the American Motocross Team. The beautiful weather they experienced last week and yesterday gave way to an early-morning rainstono, turning the fine Carnegie Cycle Park course into a river of mud. Northerner Bob Grossi was one of the few riders actually happy with' the deluge. "Bitchen, bitch en," he grinned when anyone asked his opinion. uLove it! There's nothing better!" With an attitude like that he couldn't lose, and he didn't. In the First Open Senior moto Maicoman John DeSoto predictably jumped into the lead. Grossi didn't get an earthshaking start but within two laps was catching John's mud. As they waggled down the slick, steep off-camber bill, Greasy slid past DeSoto as hundreds of spectators cheered. The day was Bob's from that point on. In all three of his races Grossi demonstrated an extraordinary mud-riding abiHty. He won bis last race with an incredible margin, nearly lapping Bob Bowers, who was in second place. DeSoto did prove to be a bit of a threat but the traction of his 400 Maico (he has decided against the 501 for the time being) wasn't up to the job. Pat deBenedetti, a man of unfailing enthusiasm, rode very well and finished with a second and a third. He didn't feel up to the last moto because a clod of mud stuck in his eye. Jim West attacked' the stuff and put on one of his finest performances since his switch to Husqvarna. Finishing around third or fourth in all of his motos, he really shone on the unfamiliar terrain. John DeSoto looked more like Grossi in the 250 Expert contest. Dave Rodgers looked very good for a lap or The Maico boys kept E. C. Sirt workin', ... -- ..: ........ . ."..
