... > . :l: ~ w Z W ...J ~ U you're racing against Clements today that's like forgetting to set your clock up an hour. Meanwhile, Blackwell and West were having their own feud a bit farther back. Blackwell took third, meaning that he and Grossi are tied in overall points. The situation going in to the final moto was as follows: Clements had two wins, so a third place guaranteed an overall. Clemen ts is 18 years old and is not about to sandbag. Should he crash or break, Grossi and Blackwell, tied, will certainly be anxious to scoop up the crown. If not, second place pays more than third. Like a piece of fiction, these three lumped together for the first lap. Grossi definitely had the upper hand when his throttle cable broke. Blackwell put on the pressure until Clements, thoroughly pooped in his sixth moto, succumbed. The final results were Clements, Blackwell, and Gary Jones, who did a neat job of riding all day with little fanfare. Bruce Baron led to the first moto of the one-two-five Experts but on the next-to-last lap left the course, hit a piece of timber, and lodl/;ed a huge chunk of wood in his hand. Brave Bruce tried to finish the race since he still was out front but the pain was excruciating and he had to be taken to a doctor. John Rice didn't fare too well in the first two races but the final round he danced his Puch about the course with a grin and a victory. Jim Lunde won the second moto and finished well enough to tie J ohn·R for first overall. Charles Mott took third. Fourth was another tie between Jim O'Neal and Don Bevans. The FIM scoring system was used today, that is, one point for the winner, two for the second, and so on. Like golf, the lowest score wins as long as the rider finishes all three. Indian Dunes is fast gamlOg a reputation, not so much because of its track (it's actually more of a scrambles than a motocross) but because of its all-around fine facilities and efficient programming. This summer the management is going to spend a bundle to improve the place, too. Billy Clements is also going to have a helluva reputation soon enough. Last year he broke into the Experts as one 01 those guys who would go fast, grandstand, and perhaps crash a bit. He'll still grandstand when there's no pressure but on the whole he has begun to mellow into a craftsman that can answer just about any threat. This week's AMXT benefit was a smash for a fund-raiser, a genuine gathering of the tribe. There will be more of the same next week at Carnegie Cycle Park, except Billy Clements may not be there... it's the weekend of the Senior Prom. (Results on page 24) .' .aJa Wins again!
