M Udom answers national question j .... '" Shari Track Cui Shari Chuck Goodrich is one of the more accomplished riders in Dist. 36, being a winner in both scrambles and motocross. By Bill Spencer SACRAMENTO, CAL., April 16, 1971 - A very cool evening greeted nearly 1000 spectators at the Capitol .speedway short track opener as 116 Bay Area riders signed up to race the first in a summer long series of short tracks on the y.. mile banked oval. Before the heats were over the threatening skies opened up and dampened everything but the zeal that everyone had for this really great show. This Bob Barkhimer & Harold Murrell promoted event will be classed as one of the finest shows available to the public. No less then six National numbers were in attendance to check out their short trackers and maybe even pick up a little extra money for the long trip East to continue the National trail. Points leader Jim adorn and second place man, Dkk Mann, both won their individual qualifying heats and continued with wins in Heats 1 and 3, respectively. adorn's team mate, Ken Roberts, likewise won his qualifying heat and heat race before the rainns came down. Action will continue each and every Friday nigh t throughout the summer and promoter Barkhirner has scheduled a point fund to be set up in the near future to add to the rider attraction. (Results on page 22) Eagles bring scramblers to the nest By Bill Spencer LaGRANGE, CA., April 11,' 1971 Modesto's Westside Eagles' M.C. drew out 286 riders for the first of three scheduled poin t scrambles leading to a high point trophy. The large turnout of young people hunted for an Easter egg with a special marking entitling the finder to a mini-bike. Big action of the day centered around the 250 Expert and 500 Expert runs. In the heats, it was Ray Huff who SPRING MUD FLING showed the troops around the shortl kidney-shaped track. But the start of the 250 saw Neil McDannald take the lead with Huff, Bill Budde and Mike Renslow right behind. Huff harassed McDannald throughout the entire race but just couldn't budge him. Renslow and Budde tangled with neither falling, but Budde was relegated to fifth. In the 500 Expert final, it was Young jetting in to the lead at the go sign on one of those super 400 Suzukis with Huff again holding down second. Ray tried every trick to get by but the Suzuki had enough horsepower to scoot out of the comers faster than Ray's Yamaha cared to go and so he went home with two seconds for the day. McDannald's win in the 250 Expert was accompanied by a second in the 125 Expert Main on a new Montesa model behind Rick Hocking (Bul). His win was also the first win for Montesa in this area in quite some time. For Hocking, it was a hard job as he had taken a heavy spill in the practice runs going across the front jump and had a set of sore ribs. Phil Anderson jumped into the lead of the 175 Novice Main. He had won his heat and it looked like his bad luck streak had finally run out. Not so, for on the last lap, his motor blew and Jim Woodward took the win. Bill Budde extended his overall poin t lead in District No. 36 with a win in the 650 Expert go. (Results on page 22) SAN JOSE, CAL., April 18, 1971 - Jim adorn proved conclusively that he will .... be in the running for the AMA National N Number One this year as he turned aside more than a dozen National riders today at the series opener of half·mile events ~ at the Santa Clara Fairgrounds. w Mounted on a brand new 650 Z Yamaha, adorn soundly defeated a W ..J star-studded field which included Jim ~ Rice, Dick Mann, Don Castro, Frank U Gillespie and Chuck Palmgren.
