SOUTHERN SPRING·AMA TO OPEN AT ROAD ATLANTA The AMA sanctioned· eight-event Southern Spring-AMA motocross series will open April 25 near Gainesville, Georgia, This series races will pay $11,700 in prize money as well as points toward the Trans-AMA International Motocross series to be run later this year, The opening event, held in conjunction with the AMA 12.5 Mile National Championship Road Race north of Atlan ta, Georgia, will be followed a week later by the second event at Macon, Ga. The final event will be held June 20 at Confederate Raceway, 1417 Selma Avenue, Selma, Alabama. By John Grant Phtos by Racing Photos VALENCIA, CAL., April 11, 1971 Uncorking a pair of terribly 'swift Yamahas, Jim Dawson accounted for two Senior class wins at today's Indian Dunes European Scrambles. His first win, which came during the running of the 125 event, was at the expense of a fine field of riders, among which were: Charles Mott (Pen), Allen Garrett (Yam), Mike and Steve Bast, Don Emler (Ric) and Jeff ''The Wrecker" Wecker who was also astride a Rickman. Dawson, who had grabbed an immediate lead from the starting line, had to withstand a fast-closing charge from Emler as the two racers roared almost side by side into the second lap, but the challenger, Emler, somehow got out of shape on the fast sand straight, and after landing on his front tire went sailing directly over the center of his fork crown at an amazing clip. Though able to join the fracas once again, Emler did so without the beenfit of that which one usually sits on. The saddle that is. And after Mott had sustained a broken shock, it was Dawson's race all the way. For his second victory Dawson completed ninety minutes of serious racing as he turned aside the bids of John Rice (Mai) , Jim O'Neal (Ric), Bryar Holcomb (Mai) , Whitey Martino (Hus) and Russ Darnell on all all new Suzuki. Even though the race was a wire to wire win for the Yamaha "flyer," the many dices which developed for high finishing positions, especially the back and forther between Rice and O'N eal, kept the proceedings going at an explosive pitch! And it was not until the final lap that John "R" was able to get in front of O'Neal for keeps. The 250 Senior saw O'Neal, again on a roaring fast Rickman, grab an expected first lap lead only to run out of fire at the base of the hill loop. Jim then had to be content to catch a first hand view of many of the up-coming "tigers" go smoking right on past as he attempted to prod his machine back to life. By the time that the riders had rattled into the beginning of their second lap, Abbatoye, who was competing in only his third Senior event, had finally stuffed his gearbox in to high and was closing ground at a startling rate after a last place start. Disproving rumors that his previous week's performance against John DeSoto had beeh a fluke, Abbatoye whipped his cycle into contention among the top four at the completion of three laps. But Cook and Sullivan were able to withstand the late-running "hallenger. The Open Juniors had to be one surprised bunch as a check of the entries at the starting banner showed a Husqvar.na, number K-9, with a canine digging his paws in to a sma.1I piece of carpet which was attached to the gas tank. The dog, not a Husky, was soon to prove that he was some sort of a HUSKY pooch as the other part of this act, John "The Instructor" McCown from South Gate, Cal., climbed into the saddle behind his patien t pupil. And away they went with K-9 and canine and McCown in - you guessed it - ninth position. A spot which they held for most of the race. Meanwhile, at th.e front, Tracy Oswell, riding' solo had stuck his C-Z into a solid lead, a position the young whiz held all the way. Steve Kohler (Mon) grabbed the 250 Junior crown after the 125 Juniors saw Bruce McLeod (Bul) had led to t!le finish. An immense group of 100 Jupiors discovered that H-D Baja riders who hail from Taft, Cal. can really generate the heat! This rider was Leo Fedewa. The victor over the Powder Puffs, who ran with the Juniors,' was Claudia Dunning on a swift Suzuki Indian Dunes will host an all-junior card on Saturday, April 24th. While on Sunday, the 25 th, ACE will present the Senior and Pro racers, having at it on the all-new motocross course for a $1000,00 purse. The action on both days will begin at 9 a.m .....
