McDougal suppresses AeA Experts Bruce McDougal, 100 Inter. winner. holds off Carl Cotton, 125 Sr. winner, and George Anderson, 3rd in 125 Sr. class. By Richard Steack CARLSBAD, CAL., April 18, 1971 ACA saw a see-saw battle between the 100 Intermediates and 125 Seniors. Bruce McDougal, riding a 90cc Yamaha, took first place in the 100 Intermediate class as well as second overall against 125 Seniors and Intermediates. McDougal was leading the first moto with Bruce Baron on a 125 Rickman and Carl Cotton on a 125 Bultaeo pushing hard. Baron took it when McDougal fell. In the second mota McDougal was leading again with Cotton second. Baron had a CIa t tire and dropped to seven tho Midway through the race, Cotton overtook McDougal to win. Bruce Baron jumped to the lead in the third mota and kept it to the finish. Cotton and McDougal fought for second with Cotton taking it in the last lap. Cotton took first in the 125 Senior class and Baron took second. Premier Helmets were awarded to 125 Junior winner Tony Duni (DKW), 250 Junior win ncr Leonard Mellgren CZ) and 500 Junior winner Tom Buck Hus). Early morning rain had cancelled the race, but the riders lining up at the gate wanted to race despite the muddy conditions. The ACA officials were called back, and by the time the first race finally started at noon, the course was almost dry. (Results on page 22) l HART SNAPS DeSOTO'S WIN STRING A whole flock of 250 Jr.'s went screaming by, and some four laps later, it was R. Di Donato (Ric) in front. B. Barker in the number two slot and G. Osborne, third, both were Ossa mounted. Dave Messer (Oss) headed up a field of 250 InL's and was able to fight off D. Macorrnick (Oss) and D. Miles (Mai) for a win here. R. Ma."ey (Yam), 500 Jr., had it all going when with a lap to go, it was J. Harker (C-Z) out in front. B. Lend! (Maico) settled for third. The Golden BuI's of P. Lunde and Tom Cook put on a real show in the 125 Int. when out of the night came one G. Robertson (C-Z). He over-took Cook, gave chase to Lunde, but time ran out and he settled for number two, Cook third. D. Carlson's little Yamana took full command in the 125 Jr.'s, over a pair of Honda mounted charger, T. Metzger and P. Kaitz. An A for effort goes to Metzger for a fine ride and a well earned second; Kaitz a solid third. (Results on page 22) Bud Feldkamp guided his Husky to a·5OOoc Intermediate win. • .aJa John DeSoto won the 250 Sr. class Thursday night but could only manage second in the 500 races. Brown (C·Z) held on for third. The 500 Expert was another matter. Earlier the Hawaiian's rear tire Let go, the tube hanging out, casing off the rim. Only the sheer desire to do his thing enabled John to finish his mota. A quick change and the 500's took to the field, not the right combination, and John had to settle for second behind Tim Hart (C-Z). Dave Pessy (Oss) took third.
