C> ll. firs' Nor'h-Sou'h "Climbo"" By Larry Huffman ORANGE, CALIF., April 11, 1971 - Saddleback Park hosted the first North-South ~ Matterhorn Championship Hillclimb Easter Sunday and, when the dust had cleared, 5. the Southern California riders emerged on top. The winner was determined by total « footage covered on the slope of the steep G50-foot Matterhorn; i.e., adding the total ~ height reached by each of the four members of eac;h team. Jerry Dunivan's South w Team barely edged out the northern California riders, headed by Frank Durso. Z The long-awaited debut of the two ~ specially-prepared 900cc ~ Harley-Davidson hil1climb bikes was the U high point of the day for the more than 1,900 spectators. Ridden by ,Jim True and Bill Harrison, both northern Californians, the two machines literally stole the show as they assaulted the Matterhorn. True fode his Harley to within 25 feet of the summit and Harrison went over the top twice. Another spectator favorite turned out to be the surprise appearance of three Kawasaki Mach III hillclirnbers.
