Association of Nevada (M.R.A.N.) sanctioned competitive event, a European Scrambles, and drew 119 entries from as far away as Southern California and Arizona. The very demanding 6.8 mile course was laid out within the city limits and consisted of terrain varying from a very long sandy wash to steep downhill sections with whoop-dee-doos and jumps severe enough to lunch a number of suspension systems and several engines. Spectator viewing was optimum with spectators being located on a high mesa overlooking the start area. An estimated 600 people enjoyed the event which consisted of three five-lap heats. Max Switzer took top honors for the day easily winning the open class riding a Husqvarna 400. Max again displayed the smooth form that enable him to capture the recent Mint 400. By Chuck Clayton R: SAN BERNARDINO, CAL. Skip Clark is usually in the forefront of motorcycle progress (he once headed Yamaha's American operations) so when he mentioned this new cycle park he is involved in, I took notice. The place is called Running Springs Recreational P..ark and it starts 6 miles up the road to Big a FOR 1971 and charged with getting it ready for grand opening next month. Picnic grounds as well as bike, horse and hiking trails will be open then, with a list of additional recreational facilities scheduled to follow. But don't go there until they're open. Running Springs will be a "membership park" with certain privileges to members. For membcnhip information, send your address to International Investment Co., Route 3, Box 119, Chino, Calif. 91710. Wherever the bulldozer hasn't scraped, spring grass is starting to appear. Perhaps, if plans for reseeding and development arc carried out (sec map) Running Springs will become THE popular staging area for some of Southern California's greatest runs. Meantime it's a hell of a fun place to ride. Bear, just a stroll east of San Berdoo. The park is privately owned and enormous: 1,180 square acres. Plus it borders 20,000 acres of BLM desert on the East and 20,000 acres of public forest on the northwest, giving oyer 40,000 available acres for dirt riding. After a long court battle, Clark & Co. got provisional permission from San Bernardino County to develop a motorcycle and horse riding operation at Running Springs, now a blackened stub of the rich forest it used to be before last year's fires wiped it out. "In a way we were lucky," grins Clark.
