australian scene 's~way_ By Peter White Dates of the important speedway meetings in Europe this season have been released by the Federation Internationale Motorcycliste (F .I.M. the controlling body of all motorcycle sports). They are: May 31: W.O. & H.O. Wills' sponsored Ulnternationale", a prestigious "open" event staged at the famous Wimb ledon track in London (England). June 15: Western zone final of the World Best Pairs Championship at Leicester (England). . June 30: British Final of the World Individual Championship at Coventry (England). July II: World Best Pairs Championship, Final in Poland. Aug. 7: Nordic·British Final of the World Individual Championship at Glasgow (Scotland). Aug. 28: European Final of the World Individual Championship at Wembley Stadium, London (England). Sept. I: World 1000 metres long track (sand) Championship Final at Oslo in Norway. Sept. 10: World Individual Speedway Championship, FINAL, at Gothenburg in Sweden. Sept. 19 or 26: World Team Championship, Final in Poland. SWEDES FOR AUSTRALIA Other important news released from Europe this week is that a team of Swedish speedway riders has been signed to appear in Australia next summer. The Swedes, super-stars of the world dirt track .cene and current holders of the World Team Cup, will ride in a series of Test matches against Australia. Seven riders will make the trip - the first time a complete team of Scandinavians has toured Down Under. Five names have already been submitted and it is anticipated they will be definite starters next October. They are Ove Fundin (five times NOISE: The sound thatkillsthe sight_ ***************** It ONE DAY SERVICE It It It HONDA * SUZUKI It It All Models In Stock It It -It It It It It It It everything for both dirt & street rider .. It is expected the other riders will be Gote Nordin (also second in the World Final to Fundin - in 1961) who has ridden in Australia previou.ly, and Has.e Holrnqvist, a daredevil and fourth in the 1969 World Championship. Phew, what a list! Reckon the Aussies won't half be working overtime to contain that lot! The Swedish tour will be in addition to the British Test team tour which is now a regular feature of the main Aussie .peedway season. They have been contracted by the major promotional body in Kangarooland, Empire Speedways Pty. Ltd., in lieu of a team from one of the Iron Curtain countries. Empir.es had high hopes of contracting a team of East Europeans last term but negotiations feU through, as expected, at the last moment. Such a proposition is fraught with difficulties and the promoters wisely have turned their attention to the Scandinavians who should turn out to be a wow of a success on the fast, racy Australian tracks. For the next six months the accent will be on Europe where the world's best riders will be engaged in frantic league competition and the relentless pursuit of. the elusive World Championship crown.. Next October, however, the focus will swing back to Australia in a big way if the Swedes made the scene as promised, in addition to the Lions from Britain. ~J\ .~imichrome ~.
