i Almeda Speedway crash Texas Centrals TakeM-X Glory injures thr'ee ~ :;; HOUSTON, TEX., March 27, 1971 ri Three motorcycle racers were injured ~ Saturday night in a pileup during the ~ AMA-sanctioned short track motorcycle : races at Almeda Speedway. One rider, Bentley Hardwick, 22, is listed in ~ critical condition at Hermann Hospital ~ The accident occurred in the semi-finals w going into the fourth turn. Twelve riders were participating in the race at. the ~ time. Hardwick, of Dallas, one of Texas' top motorcycle roadracers has been blazing an almost unbelievable comeback after rehabilitation following a gunshot wound that had left him paralyzed from the waist down. He had been working in a motorcycle shop in' Dallas when some young boys came in and caused some trouble. Bentley made them leave. The boys came back later as he was closing the shop and shot him. At first, he wasn't expected to live and later, doctors said he would never walk again. • The other two drivers involved in the accident, Darryl L. Hurst, 26, of Houston, owner of Hurst Supply Co., and William B. Young, 28, of Lafayette, La., were listed in good condition at the same hospital. The race was the first in a series of AMA-sanctioned races to be presented by the quarter mile dirt oval, operated by K·Race, Inc. Young Mike Kidd, 18, of Hurst, Texas, was the over·all top winner, riding his Bultaco to first place in the first heat, the Trophy Dash, the first Semi and in the Finals. William Boyce, Coordinator of Professional Riders for the AMA, was in Houston for the event along with other AMA officials. He said, "Unfortunately, the accident put a damper on what really was a very good show. The track adapted well to motorcycles. Few drivers even slipped d.own un til the big crash in the semi· final. They were in a pack and the lead rider went down. It was truly a racing accident.... unavoidable. " He said that he felt Almeda' Speedway would become a popular trac k wi th the riders and that AMA-sanctioned short track motorcycle races had a good future in Houston. The next AMA-sanctioned motorcycle race will be held at Almeda Speedway on Saturday, April 10, at 7:30 p.rn. Almeda Speedway is located 5 miles south of the Astrodome on Almeda Road. By John Blanton LOCKHART, TEX., March 28, 1971 Riders from the Central Texas region took all the glory at Southwest Motocross Park as many of the regulars headed to Houston, Tex. Notable, however, was the performance of up and coming Austin rider Jack Hicks and two old pros, David Dismukes of Austin and Scott Elliott of San Antonio, in the professional division. Jack was three-up winner of the 125cc class on a Penton and no one even got near him. Dismukes was 250cc winner on a CZ with 5 points. . The Open class was a monotony of three identical heats in which Elliott (CZ) stretched an early lead each time over Wayne Booth Oawa). Then, relaxed the pace enough to keep the Jawa at bay. Bill Kasson, now recovered from a serious motocross accident last year but tiring quickly on the torturous course, managed a third on his CZ each time for third overall. In the non-professional classes, the promoters ran 100cc, 125cc, 175cc, 250cc, Open and mini-bike classes, and winners in each were, respec.tively, David Bosart (Hon), Jimmy Doran (Yam), Frank Peebles (Yam), Allen Bigley (CZ), William Easter (Hus) and . John Hughes. The Central Texas track is truly a riders' course; 1.2 miles around, it winds through thick woods giving a rider something to do with 'his feet and hands for nearly every second of the way. All is not roses, however and promoters take note: you should not use half-inch steel rods to support the course marking banners; they look to skewer someone or, at the very least, crack some fingers. Wake up. (Results on page 34) HARDWICK CRASH FATAL Bentley Hardwick, who was involved in a crash at the opening event of the Almeda Speedway's Short Track series on March 27 in Houston, Tex., died Saturday from massive brain damage and extensive internal injuries. Harwick, 21, was a very close friend to Rusty Bradley, who was killed in the first lap of the Daytona 200-Miler less than a week earlier. Both tragedies have shocked the Lone Star State's racing scene. 'E C~~~~.~~~" Basqva..na Choice of ChampiODS Sport Lube Specialties. P.O. Box 629. So. Gate. Calif. 90280. 213-863-7186.
