~ Padres Forest closure "Imminent" ~ ,.. Los Padres Forest officials are trying to close the last large "open area" in the M' ,forest to all o(f-road-vehicles who can now ride cross-country on public lands. '~ Their proposal means closure of most « trails now open, and no more cross-country riding on motorcycles. It ~ w takes in a large area of forest land between US Hwy 99 and State Hwy 33 Z W between the Ballanger-Quatal Canyon ...J Open Area and Ozena Ranger Stn. This U >- encompases the Mt. Pinos Ranger U District and part of the Cuyama Ranger District. The reason they give for closure is "vehicular damage." On Mar. 30, a group of 70 ORV enthusiasts went on a tour of the allegedly damaged areas. Forest officials conducted the tour. After the tour, the 70 motorcyclists & 4-wheelers agreed that no permanent damage was viewed in areas considered by forest officials to have sustained the worst damage. Apparently natures characteristic process of restoration returned the ground to a normal condition during the past winter season. The forest officials want to close this last large unrestricted vehicular use are of the forest. Therefore, we need all the support we can get to keep the forest open to motorcycles and all ORV's. The motorcyclists & 4-wheelers in San ta Barbara area are currently organizing arguments and a counter-proposal. We need all the C) support we can get from clubs and organizations to give us a bigger voice. If nothing else_.attend the public hearing. We'll need a lot of representation there. Today's program was run backwards in clebration of "All Fools Day", but DeSoto showed that he wasn't fooling around as the CZ flyer grabbed everything except the sack which contained th.e gate receipts from an immense spectator turnout. Bringing cheers from the crowd along the S front chute, DeSoto exhibited his fantastic riding skill to its fullest limit as he shot from the turns with sand-spinning, full-lock slides and sailed from the ramps in gravity defying, wheel-cocked leaps. However, his day of glory was not with incident. In a two-bike crash just after leaving the start in the final moto of Open Sr.. involving him and Tim Hart, he found himself climbing back into the saddle with a badly twisted ankle for a restart of the entire affair after the black flag had been waved at the rest of the racers. And when the cycles roared back to activity, DeSoto was solidly behind Wayne Garrett (Yam) and young Mark Abbotoye on the sparking new Rickman, both of whom would have enjoyed pulling off the upset of 1971. However, DeSoto, who soon tired of playing cat and mouse, yanked out the stops halfway through the first lap and went cracking past the front runners at such a rapid clip that you Fouid actually see a dust devil created by the immense vacuum Don't miss the combo-cross event next Sunday at the Dunes, beginning at 9 a.m. seTA pits Ams, Masters together By John W. Adcox SILVER STAG RANCH, CAL_, March 14, 1971 - The SCTA decided to make all the competitors ride the same sections today and the results showed some interesting comparisons between the different classes. Roger Graham lost 71 points to lead the Amateur class with Blair Absher (83) seco'nd. As' could be expected, top expert, Jeff Koskie, lost only 33 with a second place total of 41 going to John Schultz. The masters, however, didn't fare as well. First place finisher Duane Stone got tagged with 53 p.oints and second Master, Don Lauerence, accumulated 58 marks against his name. The sections, ingenious and imaginative, were very challenging. One included a long section which, when thought to be completed, continued to a long sandy uphill. Section II toured a mudhole which sunk to 3 feet or more several feet from the edge; it was a real crowd-pleaser and -··WlC!~t~rObfingtesteI. •
