He also racked up the fastest five-lap race win of the night. Mark Brelsford, Keith Mashburn andthe recharged Bill Cody took the other Expert class heat race wins. First preview of things to come Friday nights until November came in the Trophy Dash. Brelsford and his 750 Harley upset icholas after J ody drove Mashburn into the wall on the second lap. Both Jody and Keith bounced off and stayed on the wheels, but it gave Mark the one mistake that he needed for the win. The Expert final again took on all the trimmings of a national final. Mashburn and his Yamaha 650 led the first lap before again giving way to the booming violinist-turned-writer. Mashburn and Brelsford were locked in a tight three way duel with licholas with all three hitting' the turns full throttle and fully locked slides. Then Brelsford over-revved it and headed for the wall. Mark somehow managed to stay on the wheels but collided so hard he broke a sprocket and was out of that race. Frank Gillespie came from way back to overtake the badly tiring Cody and grab third place on the final lap. Last year's point champion and winner of the season opener, Tom Rockwood, had ignition troubles the entire night and was fmally forced out of the Semi event on the last lap. Mashburn has now taken the Expert point lead with Rockwood and Nicholas tied for second. It was a long and rough night for national point leader Jimmy Odom. Odom has made the switch to Yamaha and appears to have much sorting out to do.• Jim was far down the list in time trials and then ran third in his heat race. He climbed to second bebind Gillespie in the Semi but could pull no better than 8 th in th e final The expected renewal of the Gary Scott-Ken Roberts duel on the big bikes in the Junior division did in fact take place most of the night. Scott and IUs Triumph grabbed fast time honors. Then each rider won their heat races with Roberts and his Yamaha a shade faster. The main even t found Scott in front and Robert doing some full bore chasing until midway in the race when the throttle stuck wide open on the Roberts Yamaha. This sent rider 'and machine flying towards the South tum wall at over gO per. Roberts smartly bailed off the back of the bike and let it fly far down the track. He took a close second to Roberts in the heat race and then came back for a second place in the final. Kidd is a kid but rides like a man on the oval. More than 70 novice riders were on hand for the opener but it was second year Novice Scott Brelsford that showed them the way on his Ossa. It was the first time that Ossa has ever won a Ascot oval race and the past experience must have greatly aided the cause of Mark's younger brother. One of the most promising of the new first time riders is Steve Mudd. Steve wheeled his Bultaco to a heat race win .md th en a close second in the final. Tom Horton fell off in front of Scott Autrey in the final with Scott also going down. This opened the door for Steve Nichols to move in and take third on the final turn. Sal Peluso, winner of the first ovice half mile in February, found the going tougher under the lights and fmished fourth. HIGHLY CONTINGENT Norton, Yamaha and Ossa have all posted weekly contingency money in the Expert and Novice classes.
