Smith Leads Trojan Pack By Art Loya SOUFH GATE, CAL., March 26, 1971 - Speed and stamina are important, but it was real class and a sleek Montesa that carried 19-year-old Chris Smith to victory in the 250 TT Main event and in the 250 Flat Track Main tonight at Trojan Speedway. A four-bike pile-up at the start of the 250 FT Main, only yards from the starting line resulted in top favorite rider, Mike Hannon of Buena Park, Calif., being hospitalized for a fractured leg a her one of the machines landed on hUn. Hannon, who won last week's 250 Flat Track Main reportedly had two former fractures of the same leg. Another top event of the 30-race program that shared a large percentage of interest of a S.R.O. crowd at the South Gate o'va1 was the 100 F.T. Main. Kirk Redding (Xaw) won over a red-hot Tom Doty and his controversial, to say the least, Honda. Pre-race concensus among the field of riders in the 100cc class, doubted the legality of Doty's new machine with which he has been scorching the Trojan oval. Although finishing second to Redding, his machine was pro tested in writing and the required protest fee by Redding himself and the backing of many more unannounced riders. After the race, Doty's Honda was stripped down and after a careful inspection at the track office, Doty had FREMONT FLAMES WET OR DRY SCRAMBLES By Bill Spencer ALVISO, CA., Mar. 21,1971 -Sunday morning and a lot of telephone calls brings nearly 200 riders out of bed. Just another typical day for District No. 36 scrambles riders. National Scrambles Champion Jim Foley was one of those that received a call and his journey from Lafayette was rewarded with a win in the 250 Expert Main. Foley jumped to a-quick lead and never relinquished an inch to show why he sports number one. Coming from behind was John Gennai for the second Gennai missed second gear off the line two times and had to work up from a fourth spot after the first turn. In the 125 Novice Main, Rod Wartok and Mike Allen gave the slim crowd its money's worth. Allen took the lead through the first corner but gave it up to the very consistent Wartok who kept the same line throughout the affair. It ended in a dead heat. Bill Budde did his thing in the 650 Expert go with an easy wire-ta-wire win, just as if he had set up the course himself. Budde shows his heavy equipment operator talent when he throws himself and his forty-incher into a corner and performs those magnificient slides that everybody oohs and aahs over. Vic Sloane brought in his 360 Selby Motor Montesa for second (Results on page 22) LEAVITT CONTINUES STREAK LAKE ISABELLA, CA., March 21, 1971 - Lane Leavett continued his excellent riding with a clear-cut win at the P.I.T.S. Trials with a total of 35 points, five of which came as a penalty for "accidentally" kicking a rock out of his way while walking the section. Dick Bledsoe and Kevin Walker were even with 58 points, but Rick got more cleans for 2nd place. Kevin WaIker followed up with 3rd. Jumps were more numerous and sharply peaked than ever, and depending on whether you were a spectator or a rider, this was good or bad. Bill BrinckJey (Maico) took 1st overall open Seniors, after fighting off Barry Kohls (Maico), Buck Murpby (400 Suz.), and Dave Hopkins (Maico), with Binckley at one pain t riding on only one footpeg. A fast race, the open Jrs. was won by Tom Hartman (Husky), fonowed by Fred Ringel (Greeves), Larry Wescott (Maico), and Dean Rachury (Maico)., Jim Pomeroy really got it on with his new PurSang winning all three motos of the 250 Srs. Mike WeUan (Maico) rode consistently for 2nd overall, with Greg Hietman (CZ) doing some bard riding for 3rd. Fourth was Buck Murphy (Maico).
