... ... - DESERT HAWKS TURNOUT RECORD CARSON CITY, NEV., March 21,1971 - Steve Thompson, Mammoth Lakes, Calif. walked off with fll"st place brass in the Jr. Expert 251-open class at the first motocross of the season, sponsored by the Desert Hawks M.C. before a record number of riders and spectators. CI> ~ « ~ w Z w -' By Chuck Clayton CAL., March 27 & 28, 1971 Over 600 new and almost-new motocross racers signed up for the 2-day all·beginners show at Bay Mare canyon. There were classes (and big trophies) for those who had never twisted a throttle • in competition, those with 5 or less races to their credit, and Juniors with more than five times on the startint line. Signup was an honor system, since Bay Mare is completely self-sanctioned. So if you see any names in the results that you know are sandbagging, give them a ribbing every chance you can. Some of the names seem familiar because they are the younger brothers of famous racers, like Greg Blackwell, who piloted his Penton to victory in the 5-or-Iess category, following the good advice of older brother Mark. All of the entries looked like full-fledged, bigtime motocross stars, with their pukka equipment and riding gear. Lack of experience only showed up late in the motos, as physical conditioning came into play. There were few spills and fewer injuries, testifying not only to a well-prepared track, but also to the lessened pressure of racing with one's peers. Everything about Bay Mare has improved 100 percen t since the last time I found it. Even the cheeseburger I bough t from the Bonanza stand was so good it would have pleased our ace hot.dog tester" and chief gourmet Bob Lenk. The course features four nice jumps, lots of neat turns and a 5th gear straightaway. Next beginner's days at Bay Mare are May 1 & 2. By then the trees should be fully leafed out, providing pleasant shade for picnics. (Results on page 22) U > U New Sav Mare Manager Victor Ojala was shooting a novice starring his son, John Ojala.
