M Hi Boots, Dehesa, Ca. AMA/Spts Committee cards. TT, By Jeanne Friestman KIONA, WASH., March 7, 1971 Spectators watched in awe as the pack headed out of sight with much sand, sage and hoop-dee-doos awaiting them in the Hill & Gully Hare Scrambles. Described as a giant, rough moto-x the course covered six and a half miles and got underway at noon. Skip Springer on a Yam. took the lead with Jack Phillips, Husky and Mark Bauder, Maico as close behind as a shadow. AU were on 250 machines. Three and four checks manned each of the two checks and they stayed busy! Averaging thirteen min. a lap for the entire race, the field of 97 ran one after the other in a steady stream. By the time the race was half over,. Dennis Schussman riding a little 125cc Suzuki had the lead and Bob Kopp on a 400 Maico was in second. Having left his choke on by mistake at the stan of the race, moto-x star Rick Poulin got off to a bad start. His strong efforts to make up time put him among the leaders, but never any higher than sixth overall, third 250. Laps six through ten showed no change in position among the first six bikes, but a. dark cloud hung over FriestInan as he watched the action from the edge of the trail with chain trouble. Forced to retire, Bill Morrison on a Yamaha, No. 12, took the spot on top in the 175's. Two laps later it was Bi11's tum for misfortune when a crash played havoc with his handlebars. A quick wire-up job enabled him to finish. At the finish, it was Schussman and the Suzuki witli a one minute lead over Kopp. Throughout the day, Dennis Schussman was a mystery to most, and everyone asked, "Who's the guy on the little Suzuki?" He put on quite a show and those who finished after him were surprised at his lead. You need only watch, to know it's a silly question, "How can a little bike beat the big bore guys?" The entire ten laps were over for the front runners in just two hours. This was an l.E.S.R.A. (Inland Empire Sport Riders Association) points event. Lars Larson, Swedish star of motocross, lately turned Californian, came to the Azle Moto park as a representative of Torsten Hallman Racing Inc. He entered the 500cc Sr. event, no doubt expected an easy victory and surprise! He not only found the competition to be tough, he found it to be too tough and was forced to content himself with second place. It happened like this: In the first moto Pbil Snipes jumped into the lead with Wyman Priddy right behind. A fierce wheel-to-wheel battle developed between them and enthusiasm carried them far ahead of the pack. Lars Larsson was a distant· third. On the second lap Snipes lost his gas cap and while trying to prevent the spraying gas from drenching him, he let Priddy get by, so the finish was Priddy, Snipes, Larsson. In the second round Snipes again took the lead, but feU off enabling Priddy and Larsson to get around. Larsson led for a bit but then Mike Johnson charged from the back of the pack and passed everybody. The round finished with Johnson frrst, Lars second and Terrell third. A bit of trouble put Priddy back to fifth, behind Snipes. N ow there was a three way tie among Priddy, Snipes and Larsson for first MOTOCROSS April 18 - Carlsbad Raceway April 25 - Saddleback Park HALF MILE & TT April 18 - Southbay Speedway April 25 - Southbay Speedway For further info. see calendar or phone ACA office 10-6 M-F (714) n4-3ACA NEW RIDERS, THE FIRST TIME OUT.
