Louis By John Grout Photos by Racing Photos VALENCIA, CAL., March 28, 1971 The American Mini-Bike Racing Association presented their First Annual Grand Prix on today's competition card at Indian Dunes and both the riding and spectator turnout was spectacular. While offering a group of well-conducted !teat races, all of which had only one injury, the association trotted out a whole bevy of up and coming, explosive talent who took to the track. For th e most part, racing classes were composed of youngsters who ranged between 7 and 10 years of age. Kenny Alexander, displaying a flashing style of slip and slide riding, was home in front of the 8-years-old and under group who were straddling the 1-3 horsepower machinery. Scott Talkington and Brian Conrad were 2nd and 3rd after 20 minutes of racing. If you have any reserved thoughts about the effort involved in containing one of these short-coupled mini-bikes for that length of time, you ought to step into the saddle for about 5 minutes. The fathers did - in a later race - and that's when the "garage hopes" suddenly became a thing of the past. It is doubtful there will be any more bench racing around quite a few homes for some time to come. After all, how can you answer Jr's question: "Dad, I was running 3rd when I turned the bike over to you. What happened?" In the contest for the 9-11 gang, riding the same horsepower machinery, 1-3 hp that is, Donald Miller, Jim Moore and Scott Mulholland had quite a back-and-forther before the results entered the books in the previous order. The 12-15-year old class on the 1-3 horsepower minis saw Mark Granberg lap the entire field as he defeated Kirk Ward and Charles Mouwen. Scott Talkington took the win for the 8 and under group who were mounted on 4-6 h.p. machines. David Lamb was 2nd, Shawn Moran 3rd. Bruce Ziegler got a victory over Keith Ward and Jim Moore in the race for the bunch in the 9-11-years old bracket for the 4-plus bikes. While the youngsters to 15-years of age division were defeated by Greg Lersch, Dana Stumwasser and Kirk Ward. Among the top racers in the mini-enduro class were Bob Kline, Scott Urquhart, Nick Hale, Bill Snodgrass and Doug Nicol. While the over-all winnen for this size cycle in the "Father and Son" competition was the team of Willy Simons and Simons. The heavily powered machinery wu dominated by Kelly "Irish" Moran, riding in white leathers which were spanked with bright green shamrocks, u he turned-back Carl Senour and Bruce Ziegler in the contest for those ll-years-old and younger. The horde aged 12-15 was stepped upon by Greg Lersch, Dave Van Hom and Todd Kearns. Indian Dunes, located a few miles north of the San Fernando Valley, Valencia, Cal., is open 7 days a week for practice or "fun riding" in an atmosphere of sunny enjoyment. This Supday, the feature contest is the April Fools Motocross. The race will be open to all classes - pay to Seniors, trophies for Juniors - and many of America's top moto stars have already poured their entries through the box.
