Entry has gone from 80 riders for their first event to a whopping 460 this Sunday, March 14. First race of the day for 100-125 Beginners under 16 also had the first disqualification. Rider No. 168 came through with such a lead that officials did some checking. When it was discovered that he was, in fact, a District 37 Novice with 205 points and three transfer rides, he was black-flagged on the spot. John Jenkins won first 125 in the race with Mike Mallory taking first 100. Madaline Almeida struck a blow for women's lib by finishing in front of some of the men to win first Powder Puffer. The 175cc and 500cc Novices ran next with Larry Westlake pushing his 400 Husky into a good lead only to do a super endo, leaving the win to Tom Sympson who also rode a Husky. The 250 Novice race saw another rider disqualified for pulling a naughty type no-no. He either got tired or wanted to share the fun so he whipped into the pits and turned the bike over to his buddy for the last few laps. Troy Hollis rode the whole race to win fU'St place trophy followed by Jerry Hill and GEorge Stoffel. Young Nick Haggard comes through home check pursued by Bob Ovenessian. Tom Bragdon flogged his Yamaha 90 through the pack to take a hard-earned win in the 100-125 Novice event. In fact, he was going so fast the flagman missed him at the finish and he rode an extra lap. Sam Weston bested sixty-odd other 250 Beginners as well as the increasing dust to win first place with Bill Gray taking second. Phil Taylor was first under-16 in this event as well as in the next race. Jim Harris was first over 40. Just before the last race of the day for 500·0pen Beginners one section of the course was rerouted for safety sake. Phil Elery made the most of the change to win. Even though the course broke up, most racers this writer talked to felt that the superb organization (each of the seven races started exactly on time) and the really nice finisher T-shirt more than made up for any problems. The trio of events will include the flat·track opener on Friday evening, April 2, and a 100-lap Pacific Coast steeplechase championship on Saturday night, April 3. The popular mo tocross action will debut on Thurs., April 1, with more than 250 riders entered. The Friday and Saturday cards, being sanctioned by the AMA, are expected to lure Gene Romero, the reigning U.S. motorcycle champion. Romero finished second in the Indianapolis of cycle racing, the Daytona 200-mile Nationals, last weekend. Dick Mann, the veteran who captured the Daytona meet, also is a likely starter. The 100-lapper, a March nationally-televised feature for years, waS set back to be the season steeplechase opener.
