Ron Tobey was able to get his "Shafter-Yamaha" off the line in fine style, hitting the fu:st tum as the leader, and never giving up this position throughout the race. The field was loaded with talent, and the traffic was terrific. Jim Keener (17F) had his Bultaco within a few yards of Ron for the last three laps, charging all the time. Pam Bales won Girls' race. Iigh ts were on, just in case...This was a wild race, with the ground-shaking, big bore bikes going full out. Rick Newby riding the beautiful "Custom Engineering" Triumph, found the quickest way around today, followed by Carroll Jackson on his No.1 Triumph, Jim Lynch (Tri) and John Scantlin and his H·D Sportster putting on their own race. Jim led John across for third by just a half·tire width, a real photo finish. One of the Open Experts was riding with a taped hand, injured in a freaky accident in the parking area. Seems he got his hand caught in a trunk lid when it was closed. A stupid photographer/writer slammed the deck lid down, without looking, sorry about that, DarreU! You buy the "Super Kit" and modify the forks. You're still running behind in the rough stuff. Handling, that calls for a new frame. Now you're smart enough to know the cost of all these changes, so the answer is...
