ell Robertson Maintains Steens' Series Lead By John Shedd CARLSBAD, CAL., March 14, 1971 When the fifth race in the Steen's Series caTl\e to an end, Jeff Robertson still hdd his slim one point lead over Jim McDonald. Robertson, a 500cc junior, has won five straigh t races, and McDonald, who rides a Kawasaki in the 100cc junior class, has four wins and a second. Behind these two are another half dozen riders who would be fighting it out for the series win if Jeff or Jim dropped a couple of points in the sixth and final meeting. Jeff has been riding a CZ throughout the series but in the final race at Osteen's Park, he will change to Suzuki. Paul Harber of Las Vegas, Nev., did this in the first CMC series. He was tied going into the final race with Gary Bailey, and on the new machine he was out of form and blew it. Almost 350 riders turned out for the CMC motocross at Carlsbad. It was a bit windy but the track was in great shape. It was the second meeting at Carlsbad in a row with the course run in the opposite direction. All the riders thought it was great so it looks like it will be run in that direction for a wh,ile. Due to another race with a large purse there was only a handful of expert riders. Two of these were Pat deBenedetti and Bill Urban who drove all the way from San Diego to Indian Dunes, took a look at the layout that was paying big money and decided it was a loser so they drove back to Carlsbad. deBenedetti was the only 500 Expert on hand so he ran with the 250 Experts. "CRUNCH" Photo by Diebold He won all three motos without much trouble, and it appeared it would.have been just as easy for him if he had heen riding a 250. The 250 Expert win went to Dieg Gualda who had two seconds and a third behind Pat. Bill Urban knocked Gualda from the [trst 250 spot in the first leg, but Gualda and Dave Smith \tept Urban behind them in the last two motos. Smith earned second spot and Urban third. Perhaps the most important race of the day was the 500 Junior. Jeff Robertson must have felt this way any how because he rode like the wind to win all three legs and maintain his series lead. L. Hench took second, and C. Bean was third. Next week the CMC will be at Saddleback Park and the following week will be the series wrap-up at Osteen's Park.
