MX Track 'Has Fiery Beginning By Dome Stingley CROWLEY, TEX., March 7, 1971 "Great" is the only word for the new motocross track here sponsored by two equally great guys, Charles Ivie and Coy Latimer, former sponsors of the Lake Worth Motocross Park which is no longer operating. The new track has a little of everything it takes to make motocross exciting and a challenge. It was a beautiful- day as the warm sun took the chill out of the air. Phil Snipes again stole the show as he led the' way every heat in the Open Sr. class on his CZ. Phil, a very skilled rider, is well on his way to the top. He is fast becoming recognized as one of Texas' best motocross riders. For the past three Sundays he nas won first place prize money in the big class. It's quite a thrill to watch this boy slide around the turns and leap over the jumps. Ken Snipes, (CZ) brother to Phil, rides in the 250 Sr. class is also some mighty good competition for Anthony J ones and Rocky Timmons. Ken grabbed the lead in the 2nd moto and held it for nearly 3 laps, but was overtaken by Jones (Hus) who came in first all three mo tos. Timmons led for eight laps out of the three heats, but ended with a third. Ole Finstad (Pen) looked mighty good today as he and Joe Joiner (Puc) battled back and forth for the lead. Joe took a super spill and ON F ed. There was plenty of excitement at the track today besides the races. It seems someone was doing some last minute welding on his 125 Sachs when a spark ignited the carburetor and it burst into flames. In the confusion the gas line got knocked loose and it really went up in flames. The crowd that had gathered scattered as several grabbed their fire equipment and began dousing it with sand, water and foam. They finally managed to put it out, but someone has sure got some cleaning to do, the seat burned up too. (Results on page 26) Texas' newest motocross park is loaded with jumps. M N ~' Q.
