Cyclesports Tag Team MX
By Janet West
HOUSTON, TEX., March 14, 1971 Houston's first tag team race at
Cyclesports Park proved to be a great
success with both the riders and the
spectators. From the majority of
comments made, the tag team idea will
be a popular drawing card.
The race consisted of 3 heats, of 12
laps each, with each rider racing for 3
laps, then trading off his machine to his
partner. The second partner would
likewise ride for 3 laps, and again
relinquish the bike to his partner.
Novice class riders were allowed to team
with another novice, or an intennedlate
rider. Experts were allowed to choose a
novice or an intennediate as his partner.
The 0-125cc expert class was taken
by Bob Graham and Don Weitinger,
riding a 125cc Sachs. Bob and Don were
pitted against David Musick and Joe
Skidmore. David and Joe had two first
places, but in the third heat were unable
to keep their bike running, leaving first
place to Bob and Don. Second place
team was Steve Hackney and Kevin
Brown, on a 125 Penton. With his usual
style, Hackney had no trouble picking
up a second, though he was aiming for
the first place slot for all he was worth.
Third place team, Michael Rau and Bill
Walling got all they could out of their
Honda, but just couldn't get close
enough to Hackney and Brown to get
around. Right behind Rau and Walling
were Brian Fox and Mark Robinson, on
a 100 Penton. Brian and Mark were fast,
but they lacked speed and couldn't
. make it around for third.
Wyman Priddy and Bill Slavick, of
Fort Worth, wrapped up the 250cc
Expert class with Greg Graham and Bob
Hanna right on their wheel. Greg and
Bob gave the Priddy team quite a hard
race, but the Husky boys turned it on
and came through rust. Greg and Bob
rode a CZ. Third was the team of Wayne
Jones and Richard Parker, who battled
Robbie Esterlein and Mike Murski for
third. However, the Esterlein-Murski
team just wasn't quite strong enough, so
J one~ and Parker collected for third.
Both teams were on Huskies.
Jake De Boe and Gary Jackson
turned it on for first in the Open
Experts. Their main opponents were
Bob Graham and Mike Calbreath. Bob
and Mike weren't letting any grass grow
under their tires, but the De Boe team
squeezed by, leaving Bob and Mike the
second place gold. (DeBoe and Jackson
were on a CZ; Graham and Calbreath on
an AJS). Again Greg Graham and Bob
Hanna shared a CZ to come in third.
Their competition was a bit stiffer in
this race, and 3rd was all they could
swing. Wyman Priddy and Bill Slavick
(Husk y) were in fourth.
In the 100 novice class, Mike Brown
and Tim Kelly were I st. Mike and Tim
rode a fine race; no one could catch
them, although Jim Mast and Rick
Hansen on their Hodaka tried. Jim Mast
and Rick Hansen were in the 2nd spot,
with Joe Fisher and Robert Rowe right
on their rear wheel for 3rd. In 4th place
were Cecile Hanna and Donna Barnes,
