He flashed under the checkered nag to collect the lion's share of a $2100 purse during the second annual running of the Optimists Club's Combo Cross. Jones, who got the starting banner for the 250cc Sr. scramble from regular dunes visitor, actor James Gamer, ripped off with an immediate lead on his roaring red and white, I8I-lbs. Yamaha bombshell, never to be headed throughout the entire event. The most serious challenge to the eventual winner was begun about 20 minutes into the intermediate race, as "brother" Dave Rodgers slipped and slid his new Bultaco into a contending position only 10 yards be!)ind the leader. However, Rodgers choice position was short-lived as Jones yanked out all of the stops, more resembling a Lake Meade hydroplane as he sent the spray 30 feet into the warm air upon reaching each watercrossing, and was home on top by a 10 second interval. With more than 400 riders on hand, dIld anxious to contest the purses and trophies, along came Jones once again in the Open Sr. race. While blessed with the craw-away pace of a garden slug in the Open feature, Jones looked for all the world like he was competing in the first race on next week's program at the Dunes. So far behind the pack was the Yamaha fireball, that the leaders, Mark "the Phantom" Blackwell (Hus) and Jim West (Hus), looked as if they were in a rerun of the Swedish Grand Prix. Blackwell had built up quite a lead by the time the race had gone half-swing, but the "wo!,der" of India,n Dunes suddenly found himself in some sort of trouble when his machinery got wet and caught a cold as it plunged into one of the many water traps.
