~ " . Cl Q. Muddy Scrambles en ~ W Z W ...J U > U .. . "'- -'- Jim Saitone had a good day on the muddy Ladi course. He picked up a win in the 500/650 Expert competition and a second in the 250 Ex. go. By Patrica Kenyon Photos by Bill Spencer HAYWARD, CAL., March 7, 1971 The Hayward M.C. really went all out for their first "rough scrambles" of the season. The track was a twisting, turning affair with a combination of soupy, quick sand type mud in some places and a thick, gooey plowed-through mud in others. It was just as much fun to sit and watch the activities in the pits as it was to watch the races. Some riders looked as if they belonged on the American Moto-X team, while others ran around looking for clean rags to dig the mud out of their eyes and off of their number plates; there were a few who just loaded up and went home. The program was run in a some what different order than usual. Most classes were a combination of several classes. For instance the 350, 500 and 650 Juniors were all run together making a 12 man heat and main. Because of a mix-up, the 250 Juniors were run right after the 500's and 650's. After the heats and the 250 Semi, Mel Stordahl made rough riding look easy as he put quite a bit of distance between himself and second place Danny Jensen in the 100 Novice Main. Bill Clark, Kawasaki mounted, was third. After having a few problems in his heat, 125 Novice Mark Smith did a great job of winning his main event. Second place, 236E, did a 11;0od job of keepinp; up with Mark, but still remains unidentified. Bart MacMurray really flashed on to win the 100 Jr/Ex. Main on his super powered Honda. Jr. Rick Johnson, also Honda-mounted, was second and Jim Foley came in third on a Yamaha. After a bit of a hassle the 250 Main Event got underway. Nick Nazzisi rode a flawless race keeping his Husky a good distance ahead of Dennis Drew and Larry Neff. It didn't look as if the mud slowed these three down any. Another guy who wasn't slowed down by the mud was Expert John Gennai. John rides as if he's been keeping company with a few motocross stars. He kept a good lead throughout the 250 Main Event, followed up by Jim Saitone and Pat McCaul. Saitone must have decided that a second place trophy just wouldn't look as good over the fireplace as a first, so he did it to 'em.in the 500/650 Expert. Riding another Maico, he duled with Rodney Noorgaard for a good part of the race. But, at the checkered flag, it was Saitone who came out ahead.. Noorgaard took second on a Triumph and Gary Comphel, astirde a Montesa, third. The races were really good and the guys seemed to really enjoy it. Next week there'll be another rough scrambles at Hayward - hope to see you there. (Results on page 26) Lodi Cycle bowl Opens To 403 Scramblers By Bill Spencer LOm, CAL., Feb. 28, 1971 - With District 36 Commissioner Leroy MacDonald revealing the fact that there are over 5200 registered AMA riders in the district and with a short track running at Reno, Pro motocross at Carnegie and CMC at Hollister, 403 scramblers still turned' out for the Lodi Cycle Bowl opener. The Lodi M.C. ran 66 events off with near perfection. The main problems of the day were again centered around the bungie cord start. In the 650 Expert run, Jimmie Brooks confrrmed the factor of consistency and beat Bill Budde to the checkered with absolute speed through every corner. Budde led off with Brooks and Tiffen Mullenax right with him but Tiffen got wide in the tree turn and, entering the first corner on the next lap, Brooks went around Budde on the outside. Budde stayed right on the tail of Jimmie's BSA but that was as close as he could come. Charlie Stewart came down out of the Reno, Nev. snow to ride his 40-incher and came in third. Three heats of 250cc Experts fought it out for places in the Main Event with many of last year's regulars unable to make the transfer. Many lacked the right tires, while others were just not in shape for the rough battle. The track W:iS tacky in practice but became its usual hard concrete self that we have come to know as the real Lodi. Sacramento, Cal., super short tracker Joe Henry was the eventual winner in the 250cc event, with Jim Crenshaw ZJ6U9 tp,4Id 3.70 /IPS 1fIt.~!! This was the first scrambles for Henry in some time but he looked like one of the regulars with a wide margin separating him and the pack. Smart money for Junior professional champion would probably go with Kenny Roberts, but if Joe Henry frnds a good enough sponsor, he will be in the running. The usual lady's class was not a feature as only the number one girl, Debbie J ackline, was available and after the club the club ran her with the 100 Expert men, it was decided that she had COLISEUM CYCLE and.
