people love cycling the way we do.
They've put up with it and some of
them have become fans themselves.
This year a lot of damage was done
to property in the. town. The
temptation is to blame It all on the
one-percenters, but they ~eren't the
ones riding minibikes and trailb,kes over
people's lawns, nor ciid they leave all the
trash. Many of own own did that, as
well as burning some of the course
barricades for firewood.
Many people were hurt over the
weekend. ABout half were spectators,
the other half were competitors. It is a
dangerous even t, wh ich of course is a lot
of the fascination. There is not much
possibility of effective crowd control. It
would take thousands of people to
really police the course and there is not
enough money in the operation to
finance that sort of program. Whether
Elsinore can continue is problematical. I
hope so. I don't think there's a better
race in the country and I include
Daytona. And I have to say that in spite
of the fact that the Gripsters wouldn't
sell me an entry and in spite of the fact
that my wife was one of the spectators
that got hurt.
