By Ron Schneiders Photos by Ron & Ellen Schneide~, Tom Culp, John Bethea, Chuck Clayton & .Jim Brooks Continued From Front Page District 37 tried their best to put a hex on the event by not listing it on the District calendar. They might as well have issued an edict against Christmas. There were dire prophesies that the clubs and all the top riders would boycott the event. It didn't happen. Some clubs didn't wear their colors, but that was just about the extent of boycott. The Sidehack Association did boycott the event, but even that wasn't effective; there were 10 or 12 hacks without them. For the Saturday race there were 100 lines of ten riders each! It took ten ! minutes to walk from one end of the line to the other. Even in this event, which was not supposed to be the main one, it seemed like every star of motorcycling was entered. In the first row was Steve Hurd, Nick Nicholson, and Jim O'Neal. In the second row was Bill Friant, Bill Clements, John Rice and Gene Cannady. It would take the rest of this page just to list the well known riders. These riders were in the 101 to 250 class. Farther back were the Juniors and starting about the fifteenth row were the Novices. Starting about o. 800 were the trail bikes and 'way back at the end were 15 gals, No. 985-1000. The start, as always, was simply awesome. One row went off about every 10 seconds but it still took almost twenty minutes for everyone to get off -- the line. No matter where you were on the course, wave after wave of bikes went roaring by in a totality that seemed endless. It seemed like every competition bike in SOIHhem California was on that track, but in reality there were another 700 being readied for the race on Sunday and two other big events were being run simultaneously. Four hundred or so riders were at that moment on their way out to the desert. It takes somdhing ltke this to make you realize just how big the sport is becoming. It's impossible to score an event like this on the spot. With over 1,0do riders and the twenty-minute start, the leaders were almost around before some of the riders even got started. By lap three the numbers were aS'thoroughly shuffled as a pinochle deck. The only saving feature was that the Experts were in the front with the low numbers, so it was possible to keep track of the tirst half dozen leaders if you were very careful. At the end of the first lap Dave Rogers was ahead with Jim O'Neal close behind and Billy Clements in third. No, 45 John DeSoto had, amazingly, already passed forty Experts and was in fifth place! By the end of lap 2, two other riders had secured places in the front, Gary Jones and Gene Cannady, Cannady, riding a 125 Sachs, was doing a!' especially good job because most of hts opposition were on 250cc machines which have a decided advantage on the long asphalt straights. Gene, though, was going like wind-blown smoke on the rough sections. John Rice and Preston the**** GHtf~ ***team bflja wins gain! tbBBarlBYDavidsos ...,.,..- OutpSrfODBSrB Sandblasters M.C.
