o '" Cll en .r; ~ dropped back. lap three and third. Don Malley kept the Charlie Brown Racing Team happy with a win in the 500 Junior over Doug Nilson. One of the old timers of the Salinas Sand Pit, Bob Achterburg hung in for a third. Thorton Smith rode a George E. Hall 350 Honda to ye·t another undisputed win in the Novice class with Santa Cruz Ridge Runner AI Cavanaugh bringing his Bandito in for a second. In the ever popular 250 Expert Main, Dieu was not to be denied. Batistoni took the second with Modesto's Mark Muscio edging out John Gennai's Ossa for third. Gennai and Muscio are a little out of their element riding atainst the likes of motocrossers like Dieu and Batistoni but both will have their day at the flat track scrambles. Palo Alto's Ed Rosman thoroughly devastated the 'B' division of the 250 Novice wi th beau tiful rna tions and terrific speed. Martin Towne was second and was also closing on Rosman, but Rosman had everything under control. M.C. held yet another super scrambles at their Hwy 101 Sand Pit. Nearly 300 AMA scramblers signed in for a day of exciting rough riding and with a good supply of spectators' liberally laced around the snow fencing, a fantastic day of racing was in progress. Again, Bob. Grossi dominated the day's activities with superior riding ability in the 5.00 Expert Main. A refreshing additioI\ to this class came in the form of Rookie Expert John Dieu. Some 30 Experts signed up to ride two 500cc heats, making the main that much more excitiJ;1g. To spice the main even more, Larry Batistoni was fully recovered from a spill at Carneige last week and Steve Ester was also ready to do battle. After a first lap restart due to a start line fracas that saw Grossi leap into the lead, Dieu was the fastest man to the fust comer. Dieu had ridden many Junior events to victories, probably more then he should, and was definitely ready for a stab at the big boys. Behind John were Batistoni, Foster, Grossi and Greg Hubbs. On a tigh t righ t left hander while Grossi was trying to work around a rider, he literally buried the front wheel in an attempt to get underneath for a pass as the other rider was quite tight in the comer. Any other rider probably would have high sided and said 'Hello, Sky, hello, ground' but Grossi grabbed a whole handful of throttle and proceeded to tear up the track. Grossi led it all from lap two with Dieu battling with Batistoni until Larry By Chris Dare & Marsh Moore FRESNO, CAL., Feb. 21, 1971 - The scene was set for 123 eager racers at Dunlap Cycle Park as three days of rain halted a couple of days before the race. Probably the best race of the day was put on by those ever-so-fast 250 Srs. The super fast Mike Cram on a Maico .led Dennis Law and the high jumping Larry Watkins. As the day wore on, water, that had started out asa stream turned parts of the course in to foot-deep mud that plagued many of the Junior riders as well as some of the Seniors. The mud didn't seem to bother the 250 Jr. first division winner, Jim Franklin, as he skillfully manipulated his bike around the 1.2 mile course, with Bobby Williams hot on his tail. Mike Cram, winner of the 250 Senior competition did well on his small Maico, but in the Open' class he was a little over-anxious after a bad start, and received the black flag for cutting a few comers in his effort for first place. Second place went to hard-riding Dennis Law, while Larry Watkins tooled his Montesa to a 3rd place, which isn't too bad for a fourteen year old rider. The next race at Dunlap will be on March 14, where there will be excellent facilities for overnighters, as well as some mighty fancy competition. You all ought to show up because it's gonna be good! The Open class was a runaway for Redmond rider Doug Aiken aboard a Maico. Frank Sunada of Portland took a strong second .riding a CZ. Aiken stopped several times in the 35 miles covered to gas his thirsty Maico and was never challenged for the lead. Bill Lipscomb, Bend AJS dealer took in third place. The bill, (SB 134) now goes to the House. The bill seeks to control all off-road vehicles through registration and through empowering the State Board of Parks and Recreation to determine what state lands will be losed to use. When the board drafted the bill, it included a provision requiring payment of property tax as part of the registration. "This is required by the State Constitution," said Harold SAI,.CS • S('AVICE·.
