~ ~ ... :;; a; ~ ~ ::. ~ BIT AND PIECES My desk keeps getting cluttered with odds and ends of items which you should know about, but which in themselves don't constitute enough material for an entire column. So this week, we're having left-overs. OUTSIDERS MOVING IN With the riding restrictions placed ~,upon California counties, the ...J motorcyclists are now ranging into ~ other area. And with them come the U same irresponsible persons who managed to get the aforementioned areas c osed or restricted. Several members of MORE who reside in neighboring counties have notified me that more strange faces are showing up each weekend. Whereas the local riders have experienced no problems with local landowners in the past, there is a mounting voice of dissent caused by noise, cut fences, vandalism, and litter attributed to a few of the outsiders. If we don't put an end to this, quick, we are all going to be on the outside looking in! Again, noise seems to be the biggest complaint. • DIRT RIDER'S BILL OF RIGHTS Perhaps some of you will recall that in 1970 we attempted to obtain California legislation .which would have required a simple form of registration and identification tags for off·road vehicles. This package, among many other benefits, provided for a portion of the fees from such registration to be placed in a fund to be used for a<;q u isition, development, and maintenance of motorized recreational vehicle areas to be administered by the Department of Parks and REcreation. We now have this legislative package rolling again and should be able to have it enacted without great difficulty. I will keep you in formed of its progress and when and whom to wirte in support. GAS TAX REFUND As most of you are aware, there are currently provisions for obtaining gas tax refunds for gasoline used by off-road vehicles. Most of us don't bother claiming the tax because of the amount of red-tape involved for a relatively small refund However, we are now exploring the possibility of claiminR a single annual tax refund W based upon a statistically.generated formula. The entire refund would also be placed in the forementioned off-road vehicle trust fund for the development of mechanical parks. TRAILS COUNCILS The California Recreational Trails Committee is making quite a bit of progress. Each meeting finds one or more counties coming forward with presen tations of the counties' trail program. Some of these include off-road vehicle considerations hut they are few and far between. Not all counties have institu ted County Trail Council even though they have been requested to do have saved about 150 of the 450 mo torcyclists who died in California during 1969." My suggestion is that each of you write Governor Reagan, State Capitol Building, Sacramento; Ca. 95814, at this very moment expressing your view. Don't think that your letter won't count. Remember that we just got a mdtorcyclist appointed by writing lellers. Do it now before it's too late. Note, California has about 25% of the nation's registered motorcycles and off·road accidents are counted as "Traffic" fatalities. TRAILBIKE TIE WEDS CLARK, MORGAN ) After a protest lodged by Mitch Mayes regarding the Barstow to Vegl!S run was upheld by District 37, a rider was pu'! back, resulting in a tie for the 1971 Trailbike Desert number one plate. Terry Clark (H-D Baja) and jack Morgn (Hodaka) earned equal points, but the number one was 'awarded to the rider who held the previous year's lower number - Morgan. . By Russ Sanford so. Does your County have a Trails COllncil? Are there any motorcyclists on the Trails Council? 1£ not, you are missing a golden opportunity. Check it out! Get some fellow bike·riders together and make your need known. If you don't tell your county representatives what you need, you don't stand a chance of ever getting it. Get involved! NEVADA CLOSURES PROPOSED I have just received notice that the State of Nevada intends to intorudce legislation to prohibit all off-road riding in the state. If this happens, the BLM lands will have to follow suit as they must abide by state law. State officials cite unoise, Htter, vandalism, and erosion" as the cause. HELMLT LAW RAISED AGAIN We thought that this had died, once and for all, last year. But, I have just received . word from the National Higbway Traffic Safety Administration that "California' is one of only 8 states which have not yet enacted a motorcycle protective headgear statute. Secretary Volpe has asked Governor Reagan that a helmet law be sought in the 1971 legislative session. California is the key State in terms of motorcycle safet y since about 20% of all motorcycle fatalities occur there. We estimate that protective helmets would PUCH First 125cc to top the matterhorn Another Deadman's Winner By Dave Brown APPLE VALLEY, CAL., Feb. 21, 1971 - The high winds Friday blew over the timing tower and about 30 feet of the fencing but Deadman's Point somenow survived the wind and the previous week's earthquake to put on another excellent day of racing. There was a light turnout which gave everybody plenty of riding and the wind subsided Sriurday to leave a day of beautiful weather. There were 181 riders going for the gold and the day went off without the aid of the much appreciated corpsmen. Only four riders were disqualified for riding in the pits and many people voiced their approval of the "no pit riding" rule. A young desert rider, jackie Stonesifer, brought his potent Suzuki 100 out to try motocross, and in one race he blew everybody in the weeds so bad, he was protested. 'The bike was torn down and measured at 96cc, and jackie received $1.0 for the protest. Anybody looking for a good Suzuki mechanic? The 250-500 Intermediat~s and Seniors were combined and they gOt with the program. Perennial winner in the 250 Senior class, Rex Staten, once again took his Ossa to three wins to take his class but close behind, Chuck Bybee and Mike Faulkner were putting on a tremendous battle in the 250 Intermiediate class. In the first moto Mike tried to get past Chuck on the big jump. He might have made it qut he ~aught ~is hanaleba.r on Chuck's biICe and It> proceeded to perform a giant number for the spectators. Mike was up and running again immediately and still managed to get second behind Chuck. oj The second and third motos saw the same see-saw battle with Chuck winning out in the second moto and Mike taking the win in the third moto. The eventual win went to Chuck aboard his Maico with Husky mounted Mike capturing second. There will be NO race in two weeks due to the Elsinore G.P. and the next race at the "Point" will be on March 21st. That race will be a benefit race for the American Moto-Cross Team and promoter, Bob Dresslar will be giving a portion of his earnings for the day to the A.MX.T. fund.
