Larry was so close to Rich that he caught a rock off his rear wheel that broke his goggle lens. Thorwaldson disappeared into the Checker's pit and failed to reappear. I would have gone in to see what happened bu I've heard tales of the unwholesome fate that awaits uninvited reporters who venture into the Checkers camp. And early morning phone call to our spy out in the cold revealed that Thorwaldson's bike suffered a broken wire in its electrical vitals. Third in to the pits was Mike Patrick, who was followed by a Junior, Ralph Garrett. CZ's desert leader Bill Bogner was 4th and another Junior, Larry Burns, was fifth . The finish line was about 5 miles by road from the pit area at the foot of a large rocky hill. Pfutzenreuter was first in, 2 to 3 minutes ahead of Mike Patrick on his Yamaha. Pfulzenrc:uler completed the rtrst loop in I hour and 5 • · • • • This is a new subscription. CITY contend with more than just the normal competition, as a cold wind was shipping s:lnd and dust across the course to tear at unprotected faces. It was still biting cold as the J umors and Experts lined up for the first assault wave. The banner was hoisted at the far left near the spectator hill in an attempt to gain a little shelter from the wind and avoid false starts. A wind-whipped banner looks a lot like a falling banner to tense racers. 10 a.m. Down with the banner and the charge to' the smokebomb began. The bomb and most of the spectators were to the left, upwind and that's where the riders headed, except for some of the more crafty Experts. Counting on less traffic, they S\.vung into the smoke to the right, dropped into the wide sandwash and got the jump on the competition. Larry Bergquist was first to the bomb, but he almost collided with TGm Muto who had taken the righ t hand course. Hot on __ ~ ~ SUBSCRIBE TO CYCLE NEWS CYCLE NEWS WEST (1 yr.) Anderson endoed and Poteet's bike gave out (though from the rooks of it, the bike did a number too) both in the wash. Twenty-five minutes later the dust had blown away and the Novices started. Some made the mistake of going too far to the left which put them into the sandwash early and cost time. The center of the start area was what might be called a rider's course with little bushes and whoop-de-doos. It's the kind of terrain that takes skill to ride fast. Following the start are~ was a fast wash with few- rim-denting rocks and lots of room to pass. From the wash the riders p'!Ssed to open desert for a swing around the mountains, and then back into the pits from the right. E!,d Loop I.
