prepare us psychologically for the afternoon section. There was a mandatory 30-minute br.eak after the first loop and it wasn't clear whether we started out clean in the afternoon section, or with the same time loss we came in with. Both systems have been used in other enduros. I asked a Cal-Poly checker and he wasn't sure. I elected tOo assume that we started off clean, largely because the last enduro that I rode in the Los Padres forest, the M.O.R.E. enduro, used this system and the two runs had been similar in other respects. Wrong again. My buddy, Gary _Satterlee, likes to race so he picked the other way. It was his day to be right. The afternoon section was tougher than the morning section. The club must have thought that the trail along the -barbed wire fence was pretty neat because they 'tool< us out on it again in the afternoon. LolS of people thought they had made a mistake someplace and were going to ride the morning section over 'again, but this was not the case. Soon we made a tum and were off in new territory. The afternoon section could best be described as unrelenting. Each tough uphill was followed by a tough downhill and the deep ruts were always there to make life difficult. You could always tell when a difficult hill was coming because you'd' run into three or four riders going the wrong way and looking defeated. But even tough enduros end and this one was no exception. For me it ended about 3 :30 but for the sponsoring club and a lot of broken SADDLE8ACr DEVElOPMENT BAJA CHARITY RUN Saddleback Park is the first, and still the best, example around of what a motorcycle playground can be like. Saddleback still lacks a few ameneties like flush toilets and shade, but Manager Vic Wilson even has plans for those in the near fu ture. Meantime, Saddleback has added several new facilities to make a day in the dirt more pleasant there than anywhere else in the vicinity. Rentals. Contact Saddleback management). New 'trails. About 40 more miles of new trails have been blazed by Wilson and his rough-riding. crew. This is in addition to the familiar trails and the motocross course, scrambles course and mini-scrambles course. First aid. A completely stocked staffed-by firemen first aid center has been established in a new building erected for the purpose. Plans in the works for Saddleback include a practice'Speedway track, more water and electricity outkts, a per.mane;'t clubhouse with pool tables, a veranda and refreshments. And soon, look for the announcement of an "Ecology Day" at Saddleback, with free admission if you are accompanied by a plantable tree. Also in th e plans is an Easter Sunrise service at Saddleback. '. enduro for a couple years and learn enough to put it on themselves by the time they become seniors. That the system works very well is evidenced by the fact that the enduro continues year after year and becomes continually more popular. The other reason for the run's popularity is the country. This club is fortunate enough to have access to-some of the most beautiful riding country in the world, including forests, desert slopes, green valleys and roUing farms. From the tops of some of the hills there are views that make you want to forget entirely such mundane chores as schedule.keeping. Most California riders never have a chance to ride in such greenness and the rare opportunity to do so is really appreciated. • .aJa Wins again! Hare Scrambles Feb. 14, 1971 100 Am/Ex. Even by dark, there were two riders completely unaccounted for. The results aren't computed yet, but the odds-on favorite to win is Dave Ekins who hit his checks very close. However, Ekins had lots of competition, including guys like Gene Burcham, Bob Steffan and Vern Hancock, each of whom is capable of winning. In addition to the ace enduro riders there were a lot of California's best racers in the running including Mike Patrick, Bob Ewing, Bob Grossi, Steve Hurd, Tim Hart and Bill Friant.
